I'm still trying to decide on a new compact camera to use when I haven't got my D80 with me. After reading loads of specs I'm confused as to which is the best - a sensor size of 1/2.33" or 1/1.72". Any recommendations as to which small lightweight camera less than 180g and with a wide angle lens has the best IQ would be appreciated please.

The fuji F100d seems to be a great compact

Thanks Dangermouse, I have put that on my list to look at. At present I also have the Panasonic FX150 (for RAW support) and FX500 as I like the big screen and touch screen facility. I'm feeling a bit dubious about the Panasonics though because of the reports of high noise.

Been thinking about this myself too, personallt though I want something that at least gives me something close to the DSLR, functionality wise & also as I'm into landscapes a 28mm W/A is very important...I'me guessing HWG that your requirements are quite similar ?

If so the list is very small...

Canon Powershots "G" series

Ricoh "R series"

Sigma DP1

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2

Not an exhaustive list, probably others too, some of these are not exactly compact either..

the big problem is that when you've had a decent DSLR using a compact is sometimes going to be a little disappointing

How about getting a D40 kit? That's what I use, it's very compact, light, and will take any lens I throw at it :). Now, it's nowhere near the 180g you're looking for, but it's one hell of a camera.

You can get a "pancake" lens to mount on it and that makes it ultra small and compact.

i bought a fuji f40d for the missus and its a cracking little camera, i bought myself one and an underwater case. just bought the daughter one for her 21st as well. might be worth a look Barbara, see if it suits
Thanks Dave. I've had a look at these but the problem with this fuji range is that the only one with wide angle 28mm is the f100d and this doesn't have aperture and shutter priority, but I do think the IQ is quite good on these for a compact camera.

Thanks Simon,Yes wide angle is definitely an issue for me too. I found most of the above to be too big to fit in my pocket. I have a Fuji e900 which I use sometimes but find a little bulky, not wide angle enough and the LCD is too small.
The Sigma DP1 is very expensive, The LX2 or new LX3 seems a very nice camera but although quite compact is still quite heavy for an ultra compact, and again I am worried by the noise issue. The Canon G series is still quite bulky, and I haven't yet had a look at the Ricoh R series, but I will have a look now.

Thanks Wail but I already have a D40X kit which I use with a 50mm or 24mm prime lens, or sometimes my kit lens, but it wont fit in my pocket. It must fit in my pocket as I need it for those times when you need to get a shot but haven't carried your DSLR around with you.

The Canon powershot g10?

I don't have one but the specs are amazing! (A bit pricy though!)
