How do you achieve this sort of look:

The closest I can get is a surface blur and then a hi-pass filter in Photoshop. It's possible I might be doing some packshot photography for a client if I can deliver the results, so I would really appreciate some advice on this.

In one instance I would actually have a matt finished prototype to work with - where as the finished product will be the same colour, but will have a gloss finish. It would beneficial to myself and my client if I could achieve the gloss effect with the prototype product as it would reduce their lead time to market.

I'm going to do a test shoot tonight with a couple of items and try a few things myself, but I would appreciate any advice on doing this.

Thanks.

Large diffuse light source such as a softbox. It's not a postprocess, but part of the lighting of the subject in the first place

PS. You'd be better off in the talk lighting section...

Okay, maybe that's a bad example.
I appreciate this is in part about lighting - that I have the hang of.

My client had some pack shot photography done by a previous photographer - the product photographed was a prototype with a matt finish. He was able to produce photos where by the item had a gloss finish. I'm trying to understand what he would have done to accomplish this?

Like I said, I'm going to attempt this in a short while to see if I can replicate the same effect.

The images shown are graphics not photos, maybe thats the best answer.
