Below is a shot I took of a young house sparrow a few months back. It's straight from the camera (when I was still taking JPEG images) with absoloutely no editing. You can download (or right click and save as the case may be) the full size shot by clicking the image.

Lightened shadows by 20
Upped contrast by 10
Ran through Noise Ninja
Unsharp mask at 59%

Here's my rather rubbish attempt.

In gimp, curve to lighten, curve to increase contrast, a small boost in saturation, USM, select around the bird, invert and despeckle, crop.

If I had a clue what to do, which I don't, I would make the right hand part of the branch disappear, so that the bird and the branch are suspended in mid air.

Cropped to put the eye on a 1/3rds intersection
Levels
Saturation 20%
Shadows / Highlights (Shadows only - 25%)
Sharpen (creates nosie, but doesn't bother me)
Paint the catchlight white, select eye only and sharpen some more
Resize
