The easiest way, to my mind, would be to add a B&W adjustment layer and get that set up so that the B&W portion looks how you want it to (at this stage, all the image will be B&W). In the layers palette, you can see the icon for the B&W adjustment layer. It looks like a screen where the top diagonal half is black and the lower white. To the right of this, is the layer mask icon. Click on this and then select the gradient tool. Set the gradient tool to go from black to white (the drop-down menu first one in from the left). To the immediate right of this are the selections for the type of gradient. Select the left-most one of these. Now simply click somewhere on right of your picture and drag directly left and release the mouse. This should be close. The mask can be tampered with to alter, so it can be painted over in black (to hide the adjustment layer) or white (to show the effect of the adjustment layer).

It sounds difficult, mainly because I'm not terribly good with words, but it is an extremely powerful and flexible technique (masks in general, that is, not necessarily gradients).

The best way to di would be to sort out your colour shot then use the B & W adjustment and mask it off. You could apply the adjustment and mask the new B&W layer over the colour one. Or just mask the adjustment layer itself.
