Colour pop query?

Hi all,

I'm due to marry in August, Ive had my dress for sometime but haven't stored it properly so the sequins on the bodice have yellowed. I don't have the money to repair the dress and really still love it. I have a friend who will be taking my wedding pictures and is going to give me all the images.

Now, I can colour pop from say, black and White to enhance an image using layer masks in GIMP - I have no other software, could I edit the wedding pictures and just adjust colours so that the dress doesn't look oddly vintage? Would I use a technique similar to colour popping?

Thanks in advance for any ideas! Will be cheaper to edit than to buy a new dress!
 
You know, I didn't even think about B&W .. Even sepia, which I really like .. I've just taken 4 pictures and uploaded to Flickr - Here - one of my friends says that I should just wear the dress as is, but 2 others and my Mum say that it would show up too much. I don't mind wearing it so long as I can fix the photos so that no-one would ever have to know ..

why not just quick select the dress,then de saturate the yellows like so ;)

I'd probably do it the same way in photoshop, in Gimp I thnk you'll have to use quickmask for the selection?.
 
Excellent! I've had a play around in GIMP and can do this! I'm so happy now, I was really worried and felt as though I'd be really conscious wearing this dress but now I'll just remember that the photos will fix everything! Thank you so so much for helping! :)

I think the only thing with desaturating is that I really lose the ivory of the dress but I can surely play around with levels once I've selected the area? Is this an area in which layer masks would be helpful so that I can correct any mistakes - the dress has a lace style edge to it so selecting might be a little tricky to get right each time? I'm hoping to print pictures which is why I'd like the colour of the sequins correcting, de-saturating makes the dress really white. Could I desaturate the yellow, then warm the white again without affecting the detail?

Also, my friend is taking my pictures on my
D3100, she wants me to teach her to use it but provided I have it all set, and if I set the WB before the ceremony begins (yes, I'm a control freak) then the pictures will be fine. Would be this a good opportunity to shoot RAW so that I can fix pictures more easily? Or can I get away with JPG and just edit levels from that?

Just desaturate the yellows, not all the saturation or the dress will go black and white.
But a bigger problem is MrG has now seen the dress... so you'll need to buy a new one. ;)

I would say that, so long as you have a spare memory card, I would definitely advocate your setting the camera to raw,

as

you are giving it to someone who may not be familiar with it
you are setting the WB possibly an hour plus before the photos

The reason for the second memory card, just in case your friend gets trigger happy. Needing to stop and change the card (shouldn't be too difficult right?), will help them to realise how much memory there is left, and budget for things like first dance etc.
