Quick question before i go ahead, i just received my grey card today and was planning on using it to colour match paint to use in my home studio. I do like the idea of grey / black which i feel will suit the room and look very smart, this is my choice and not just joining the debate of why 18% grey.

Has anyone done it this way and if so how to you find the room, too dark or just about right?

Hi Mike

Some years ago I ran a studio where we used grey colour paint for our infinity cyc. However, it wasn’t an 18% grey, but somewhat lighter, being about halfway between a grey card grey and white.

The studio doubled as a photographic and television studio and the tone of grey used gave us the best all-round control. If we required the background to read as white, then that was easily sorted by lighting, plus if we wanted a dark background, then that was also easily accomplished by controlled foreground lighting and background flagging.

Summing up, the grey proved itself as being easier to work with than if it had been a white painted cyc, but it’s worth noting that it was quite a large studio and I had a big range of lighting, flags and drapes available.

If you decide to go ahead with grey, I would be interested to hear your feedback.
If I can help further, then please give me a shout.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback on this, i decided i was colour matching the grey card or having 'ice storm 2', the guy was very helpful and the closest colour match turned out to be 'night jewels 3'. We compared the ingredients of the 2 colours and they were identical except a bit more red and orange in the ice so based on that night jewels was the obvious one to choose.

Spent this week (some holiday) getting the room ready to paint, lots of filling sanding ....ect...

Anyway today i finally managed to get the first coat on and im loving it already, very smart / classy looking. I will get the 2nd coat on tomorrow then get the room set up for a play over the weekend.

This is just a hobby for me although i would like to believe in a yr or 2 i could make a few £'s out of it, lots of learning to do. Just bought (NOT BROUGHT!) a Lencarta smartflash to use as my key light leaving 2 yn460-ii for hilite and a spare sb600 if needed. Cant wait to play, the super black bottle top is first on my playing agenda, finally having a room dark enough to control the light, wether or not i can do it is of course a different story
