Been looking through some of my old photos & found this one. I shall be getting a PhotoSuite or similar soon but in the mean time I wondered what this would look like in B & W and as I don't have the program would somebody do it for me. Don't know if it will look any better but might be worth a try.

Thanks very much. Not sure which works best.

Hi - first one probably with a tweak on the contrast and maybe a bit of cropping - nice subject for B&W :)

Thats a great job Ron - i was worried about the lovely grain in the wood being lost, but your crop re-emphasised it

your welcome - i love black and white and your shot is a perfect subject and well seen - thanks for sharing

Mono conversion from green channel. Virtual Photographer filter 'Anvil' applied - tweaked contrast.

What I need is a decent edit program. Is there any good free downloads or if I have to buy one, what is recommended?

There were a number of free programs reviewed in a suplement to Amateur Photographer this month - might be worj grabbing a copy? From memory, Gimp, Picasa and others were compared.......

I use GIMP (http://www.gimp.org)...

That was from the original, decomposed into RGB layers, blend the layers to produce the basic b+w look, flatten the layers, duplicate layer, layer mask, blend layer mask, flatten, sharpen, border.
