Collections in Lightroom -- how to stop them

For reasons best known to itself, and probably because of something I am doing, Lightroom puts random photographs in a collection; either a smart collection or something it just creates. As I say, it's probably something I'm doing but I don't want it to do it. Is there any way of disabling collections altogether so they are never used?

If you right click on the empty space in the LH panel you can choose what's shown there. Just uncheck Collections and they will disappear. They'll still be there in the background, but you'll never see them.

I have a similar-ish problem in that LR puts files in the Quick Collection without me asking it to.

But otherwise I'm fine with Collection and find them very useful.

Typing 'b' on the keyboard while you have a photo selected will add it to the Quick Collection, perhaps that's what you are doing?

Wow, could be!

That's (pressing B) a useful short cut for adding to the quick collection. I'd always done it longhand but assumed it was Q anyway.......
