Myself and my partner have just added a baby to the family so obviously I am gone baby photography nuts!

I have a 85mm 1.8, so portraits are sorted. But its focus distance is quite far, so what I'm looking for is something for the more arty shots, like close ups of feet and hands, that sort of stuff.

What lens would you advise? I don't want to crop all the 85mm shots because some of the crops would be quite zealous...

Based on what you have told me you need a proper macro/micro. Personally I use the Nikkor 105 VR, but you could use the 90mm from Tokina or Tamron, or the 40mm or 85mm on DX or 60mm on FX Nikkor as alternatives.

I used to own the Sigma 105mm (on Canon) and didn't rate it because it didn't internally focus often ended up bumping the thing I photographed - so I couldn't recommend that one myself.

Plenty to choose from...and from £200ish up to £650.

That's quite like some of the shots I'm looking to achieve (stunning photograph by the way!).

Is that a DX lens by the way? Looking at the specs it has a much better close up focus than the 85mm and being DX has that extra natural reach too. My 85mm can only focus from about a meter away which is twice as far as the 16-85mm.

I'm going to give the 105mm a punt to see what I think as there are some other even closer shots I'd like to achieve too. Also, its a 2.8 so will give me some nice arty DOF too :)

Yes it is a DX lens. I am really pleased with it as my "walkaround" lens too, have been impressed with its versatility.

The fingers were at f5.6 1/50s handheld and I was amazed that I got away with it!
