Hi Guys,

I'd like to know how to retrieve lost data that is blown (iw when the image of the picture just taken shows on the LCD screen with the histogram the areas that flash to show they are blown etc).

As a general rule I always take 3 pics of most things (one under exposed, one on exposure and one over exposed). I have yet to do any real post processing (currently working my way through trial versions to determine which I want although it looks like Elements 9 or Corel Paintshop).

Just want some advice on what the best process would be to take 3 such pics, combine them to get the best picture as well as retrieve any lost (or blown) data.

Am I right in thinking the blown areas are clipped?

Sorry if its a daft question. I'm new and still earning.

Cheers

Clipping can occure in both shadows and highlights, it just means the the detail is lost to either black or white. It's probably better to try and avoid it in camera if you can rather than fixing it PP.
Most cameras have the histogram as part of the display on the lcd screen, theres usually an options for "blinkies" or the flashing clipping warning (usually just highlights on camera) One trick is to expose and if you get blinkies keep underexposing by a 1/3 of a stop untill they stop flashing, you "should" then have some detail in the lightest tones.
