Clearing Out Toot - Landfill Alternatives

I have been having a clear-out at home and now have a reasonable collection of toot that is not worth putting on fleabay (low priced items / high postage prices and fees etc) so I need some other way of disposing of it all without it ending up in landfill.

Are boot sales even still a thing? last time I did one people were haggling over 2 pence and the whole thing was quite unpleasant.

Yes, I have considered donating to charity and may well still go that route.

What about FB Marketplace? do people buy things for a couple of quid and then travel to collect them? although not keen on strangers coming round my house.

Any other way of disposing of my toot? Helpful suggestions welcomed....
 
I’ve sold stuff at car boots, Facebook and (mostly) eBay over the years.

I wouldn’t bother with the car boot sales, nobody, including myself, wants to pay anything for stuff there, everyone is looking for a bargain.

Ebay is still good for selling but hard work, I wouldn’t bother for low value items.

Facebook has a good reach but is unregulated, there’s no easy way to manage the sales process, ie you advertise a popular item and a seemingly sincere purchaser promises to collect at 6pm. In the meantime you have loads more people messaging you also wanting it, you tell them it’s sold pending collection. Come 6pm, your initial buyer is a no show and you have to go through it all again. Generally it’s fine though and I’ve sold a few pieces of furniture etc via fb.

We've all got too much stuff basically. :oops: :$
 
Looks like it'll be donated to the charity shop - it's a shame because I'm sure some of it they won't want either so may still end up in landfill :rolleyes:
 
I give stuff to charities and if they do not want it I try Freecycle, Freegle and FreelyWheely. Not sure if you have anything like those where you live.

There have been a few who make silly offers or don't follow up but you get that off any place you advertise.

No probs giving out address, you need to on most places now, especially as things are often pick up.
 
If it’s anything photographic or interesting why not put it on here in the freebies section , more steptoes on here than you realise

I wouldn't worry too much, you'll be surprised at how much ends up in landfill including thousands upon thousands of tons of material you may believe is being recycled.
 
I've got rid of stuff on gumtree in the past, as well as Facebook marketplace.
You'll get the usual muppets asking if they buy it for a fiver, can you deliver it for free.... :LOL:
 
FB marketplace, freecycle seem to offer a steady flow of people who'll take anything for free or next to free. Buyer collects.

You may struggle there, alot of charity shops in our town haven't been taking donations for several months. Quite a few people around our way have just resorted to leaving their stuff in boxes at the ends of their drives with a sign inviting people to take whatever they want from the contents.

Normally they would, it's a covid thing, they have to clean stuff and or store stuff for a length of time before they can put it out in the shop. Add to that some people just dump their stuff outside the shops overnight or in the early hours, which they don't like either. It is worth contacting them first to see if they will take it though.
We have a few wildlife sanctuaries in the area that do take stuff, but it usually tends to be bedding and towels that they can use for the animals rather than stuff to sell on.
 
ive got 100s of CDs and DVDs to clear out as well?
they are worth peanuts
