hi, im thinking of doing a city and guilds introduction to photography level 1 does anyone know what this will cover and if its worthwhile its the only photography course near me and they dont do any follow on course ie no level 2 or 3, the course is going to cost £240, is it worth me doing it if i cant then follow on from the level 1 , do you have to have a digital or 35mm film camera i only have a old slr film camera and a canon ixus digital camera at the moment i will probably want to get a digital slr camera in the future, im very confused at the moment  Sam.

Hi,

My initial response would be - have you spoken to the college? Give the course secretary a call and if he / she can't help ask if it would be possible to speak to the course tutor.

I have signed up for a C&G Level 2 - I skipped the level 1 after meeting the tutor and showing him some of my pictures.

Level 1 will start at the beginning - composition, exposure, depth of field, Aperture vs Shutter Speed vs ISO relationship. I also believe there may be some elements for critique of other peoples work and presenting your own.

If none of this means much to you then I guess this would be the course to go for.

Some C&G courses do a Digitial only element. I know my course this year will have an element of Film (B&W) as well as digital. Unfortunately I don't know about level 1.

The 35mm will do fine. The Ixus takes cracking shots but you have little control over Aperture / Depth of Field so may limit you when you need to work / experiment with this. The course overview does state you need an SLR or similarly adjustable camera - the Ixus isn't.

Here is a course overview from the City and Guilds website - click on the PDF links - you may find it a bit heavy going though.

Hi,

Although i've had point 'n' shoot cameras for years, i'm new to using (D)SLRs. I bought myself a Canon 350d some weeks back and now want to learn how to understand all of the functions and the basics of photography in general.

So i've signed up at my local college to attend a C&G level 1 evening course. It's costing me £160 and is 15 evenings.

I'd ask at your college, but mine course actually requires a 35mm Film camera to participate as it covers everything Freester has mentioned and also developing film.

So i've had to borrow an old 35mm SLR camera to take part but i really wanted the benefit of going to the college and learning from the ground up.

It is a very basic course, when I did it last year most people were using digital point and shoot cameras with a few using film and a few using DSLRs. I found it to be a very basic level and all I got out of it was the time we spent in the dark room, but I have been confident using my old film SLR which is full manual for years, so had a grounding os ISO/aperture/shutter speed etc...

I did level 1 at the begining of this year, starting level 2 the week after next.

IMO, I thought that level 1 was very, very, basic. Had I known at the time then I would have jumped in at level 2. I had only been shooting DSLR for about 9 months before I took level 1 and taught myself 10 times more in those months than the 12 week course.

i have an interview for a level 2 next week in photography

quite looking forward to showing my work

sounds like i could do with doing the level 1 then but i will give the college a ring first, im just not sure where i go once ive done the level 1 maybe the tutor will be able to point me in the right direction, just dont seem to be able to find a college near enough to me doing the level 2, thank you all for your help, Sam

Hey Sam,

I'm in a similar situation that the college here doesn't go onto level 2 courses so once i've got to grips with how to take a photo, then i reckon an online course will be next as it'll fit in with my work requirements.

Good luck Sam

Steve

i think im going to go for it, if i keep putting it off i suppose ill never get anywhere, gotta start somewhere, thanks everyone
