Hi

I've decided I need to get more of my photos off the computer and onto my walls. What is really putting me off is the cost of inks for my Epson 1400.

Question then is, can anyone recommend a decent CIS system ?

From a quick search online, a few are available but I need one which is simple to set-up and operate.

Any recommendations will be very gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

Gary

I bought mine for my Epson 1400 off eBay from this Company in the West midlands
Inktec Midlands tel 01902 307111 or they also go as Ink Express Ltd, Unit 20, Fallings Park Ind. Est.
Park Lane, Wolverhampton WV10 9QB

I have never has any clogged heads and leave mine turned off for 4 weeks at a time for holidays and a full set of 100ml inks costs very little.....highly recommended.
When fitting the cis on the 1400 the most difficult part is trying to get the cover off the top of the ink cartridge carriage

Hi Dave

Thanks for the steer. Have just checked the website and cannot believe how inexpensive this set-up is !

Will definitely look into this further.

Regards

I had an ink express CISS for my 1400 too. Get some custom profiles made (POAH on here is very helpful) and with the right papers you get some lovely colour prints. Matt papers work a treat but I couldn't get a decent print on Ilford Pearl which is my favourite paper. B&W don't seem to work on the 1400. Lots on the forums about this and I could never lose the colour casts.

I "upgraded" to a Fotospeed CISS. A little bit more expensive but to be honest I don't see a difference in quality. And still lots of incompatibilities with certain papers.

Overall, well worth experimenting I think. The hassle setting the CISS up (not installing, just getting decent colours) is frustrating but in the long run it is well worth it.

I just bought an Epson 2880 so will be selling my 1400 with CISS soon, but it has been fun to use and my house and ofice are full of prints made on it.

Regarding B+W printing on the 1400. A guy called Brian AKA Zone8 on dpreview.com has done a lot of work trying various methods to improve a B+W image printed from the 1400.
Here is his method and it works http://www.photosnowdonia.co.uk/ZPS/epson1400-B&W.htm

except the dynamic range and tones will be crap because you are only using one ink. also the amount of ink being put down will be less because you are using plain paper.

Sorry for being quiet on this thread.

Toonie, have you tried the Permajet CIS at all ?

It also looks value, particularly given the paper offer on at the moment.

Thanks to all for your input.

Much appreciated.

Yes Gary I use it with my 1400 & find it excellent using Permajet papers. Fotospeed are also highly recomened by a few people & also do free profiles when using their own papers. The Permajet system tho' uses no foam in the cartidges unlike some other cheaper makes. This makes it easier to clamp the pipes when not being used for a week or two & resume printing without having to clean & unblock heads every time printing resumes.

Just to update.

A good friend of mine who is a fine art photographer recommended the Permajet system so I have now put an order in for a Permajet Eco-flo CIS plus some papers. Delivery expected tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be back asking about set-up, colour management and all that.

Thanks for the advice from all in helping me make this decision.

Best wishes.

Gary
