No
Hi TP'ers
It seems I may have an issue in my photographs with chromatic noise (?) but it only seems apparent on other monitors. Well I say other monitors, what I mean is on my sisters monitor my photographs look horrible, lots of magenta noise everywhere, yet on my monitor they look OK and indeed when I print them they look fine.

I have viewed my Flickr gallery on other monitors and some are darker, some are more saturated but never really noticed this issue before.

The problem is more this. Is my sisters monitors settings set to 'whack'? Or do I need to make sure my photographs are fine on any display? What I didn't have time to notice is whether it wasn't just my Flickr gallery that look awful or if it affects others. I must say that some images on her monitor looked fine (non web photo's, Windows 7 desktop images). I'm probably going to be a little worried if say, your photostream looks OK on my sisters monitor while mine looks terrible still. :bang:

Could I engage the TP hive mind and ask for you to view the front page of my stream and tell me if my images look noisy or technically 'not as good as they could be'?

Many thanks

Scott

is your monitor calibrated and is your sisters, all that count is they look ok on your monitor and print like you want,
just a quick look and must say looks spot on, and i love your work, some cracking pics there.
and my monitor is calibrated with spyder 3 pro.
the only thing a will say is they look a little soft, but that could be flickers compresion, do you over sharpen for flicker.

Thanks Scott. My monitor isn't calibrated as such, in as I don't use any software, just the default settings in my graphics card/monitor.

I'm not sure how I can combat any softness, I've always felt my images aren't as tack sharp as they could be... I don't really know why. I sharpen using Unsharp Mask (125% - 200%, 1.4). It could be my camera/lens (Nikon D80, Nikon 18-135mm kit lens)? I focus correctly (one third in & mostly f/11) so I don't know how to get my shots super sharp. This is a factor I want to sort out before I upgrade to FF & a Zeiss lens.

I have found a good sharpening tutorial for the web, the sharpen, resize, sharpen again, resize again process you mentioned. It doesn't say anything about sharpening full size images for printing so I guess I'm just going to have to stick to my usual unless someone can recommend something better.

Back on topic, still looking for feedback from other TPers monitors & what they can see. My main worry now is if say Antony Spencers images (for example) look good on my sisters monitor which would make me think what's he doing right that I'm doing wrong. I choose Antony because I know he would have paid proper attention to issues like this. It's not good getting it right in the field only to ruin it by not processing correctly.

For what it's worth they don't look at all noisy on my monitor. I can see noise in the sky in some of my own images where I'm shooting birds with a 400mm against an overcast grey sky so I know how bad it can look but there is nothing like that in yours - on my monitor. I think your work is great. I just wish I had your vision for such scenes.

Thanks Martin, that's reassuring to know.

I'm at a loss really, until I get back to my sisters PC I'm not going to know if other streams on Flickr are noisy (or as noisy).

If it turns out that Tony's stream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/antonyspencer) looks fine on her monitor then I will know it's me & have some work/process issues to sort out. I can be guilty of pushing it a bit.

If Tony's images are a little bit noisy (which I would doubt) then I will feel a little relief. If they are not then I know I have to do something. Until then.....

I have since viewed other streams on my sisters monitor and I can safely say that her monitor needs some adjustments. There is still though some noise in my images though I'm assured that it is negligable. Considering I shoot long exposures and have no NR software (as yet) I feel a lot more comfortable.
