Just a quickie, anyone got any tips on shooting a christening, its my brother-in-laws tomorrow so no real pressure, just wondering what you think would be standard shots? Would you treat it like a wedding and do set groups?

I have a christening to shoot next month also. Going to need all the help I can get.

Bought myself a Gary Fong tupperware box this week to put on my flash to help with the low church lighting.

My only advice would be to visit the venue before you have to do the shoot and work out the best angles and backdrops etc.

I've done loads of christenings Glen and there's no particular format. They tend to be informal compared to weddings. Have a word with the vicar beforehand and see if he objects to flash shots during the actual christening. Some will - some wont - some wont allow any shots, flash or not during the actual solemn part of the christening so you'll have to play that bit by ear.

There shouldn't be any problems after the event. I'd go for a few shots around the font either full flash or fill flash depending on the light in the church. I'd take the rest outside probably with fill flash. Parents with sprog. Godparents with sprog. Parents and immediate family groups etc -then all the guests in for the shot. It's not rocket science, ring the changes with the shots. :)

Cheers guys, you hit the nail on the head CT, just the thing I was thinking, will speak to the vicar in the morning.....Thanks!

Yeah I'd like to see something too. I'm an Uncle and a Godfather now and I'm shooting my nephews christening. God only knows how, being in it n all ;) Wireless trigger time me thinks :D

Can you let us know is the Gary Fong tupperware is any good once you've had a play (no pun intended)?
cheers

A few others on here have had one for a while including CT I think.

May be better to get one of them for an opinion.

Cost me £42 from Kerso.

Yep, Ive got one, and think they are very good, it does give a nice balanced light, a lot better than just flash on its own, no harsh shadows. Worth it if you use flash a lot. I got mine from Kerso too.....

All went to plan, Vicar got in the way when he was splashing the water on etc.. so I didn't get a shot of that, but I think I got a few good ones, plus the usual group setups, will post some pics up when I've processed them tomorrow, as I shot the whole lot in RAW.

That'll be interesting I never seen an HDR'd christening before :D

Should have told him to butt out - no one should get in the way of the photographer. You could re-enact the event with an actor playing the part of the vicar. :)

Still going through all the images, here is one for now...

Thanks, sorry to appear thick! but for the life of me can't think what GF means  :help:

Scrub that light bulb has just flashed on!!!, No didn't use the GF (Gary Fong) wasn't allowed any flash in the church so had to wing it with higher ISO and any natural light.

Lovely shot Glen - well done mate!

Thanks CT, everything kinda went to plan, I took around 250 shots, of which I'd say 150 are keepers, of those around 50% could have been improved with either better composition, correct settings.

I'm not sure if anyone else is the same but I found myself getting carried sometimes reeling shots off, instead of standing back for a couple of minutes and thinking about the comp, crop or checking settings, but its all part of the learning curve.

Thanks Carole, yes they were pleased with the pics, it was quite funny on Tuesday I had to babysit Olivia all day which was a bit nerve racking at first but she was great all day, handy to give her back though, can't see us having kids just yet, seems too much responsibilty, but we are starting to warm to the idea.

Love image 8, where did the red colouring come from? was it the ladies dress ?

Nicely done. That kid looks like a dream to work with. :D You realise you'll pay for this - the next three will be grizzling and bawling throughout.

Nope, that be my misses with the red top, it actually came from the coloured glass in the top windows, you can actually see the dust floating round in the sun rays too.
