Yes I've only been here a few weeks and already I'm getting into the spirit of your competition things!

So anyway the reason I joined up was to get a better understanding of DSLR photography, given that I've only been doing it for 6 months now, and boy have you guys produced the goods! This week my main lesson has related to Aperture settings which I had a go at experimenting with this weekend.

So anyway, my Curves, well there could only be one reason for this photo, one can never get enough photos of one of these - and it happened to fall nicely in my visit to Pensthorpe!

So, Week 1 Curve

Hi Chris - Glad that you're getting into the spirit of things and it's great to see you starting a 52.
If you edit your first post to update the thread title to include week no. and theme, people will know that you've loaded your shot up and you'll get more views ;)

I knew there had to be a swan in here somewhere for "curved" and you haven't let me down.
Speaks for itself in terms of theme, just keep an eye on your backgrounds with this type of shot. The ducks in frame at the top right are just a little bit distracting and are pulling my eye away from the swan. Easier said than done I'm sure . . . not easy getting a swan to pose for you

Thanks Karl & Sarah
How's that look? The title should be updated.

Sarah - Do you mean the top left?

Very nice, maybe try to get a bit lower - which might help you get a better bg than the duck-things in top left. Also can you kick it up a bit... in my eyes (admittedly older ones) some pictures should be bright and in your face - that for me includes flora/fauna - ansd ome should be calm and quiet. Yours is a bit muted... (see what I did there? :D )

Arthur

Chris - I like it. Simple but effective.

Pensthorpe is always a good place to visit. Was it a one off or do you have a season ticket?

You will not find a nicer curve that a swans neck  :naughty:. Agree with a few comments about a lower angle and the ducks in the top right..left. Tried to get a few shots of the swans at the Manchester meet, not easy to get the metering right(for me anyway).

Scott

This is only a hunch....but I think we'll be seeing a lot more feathered friends in this 52...!!;)

Great start Chris...nice pose by the Swan and not over exposed like so many swan shots!

Only crit I can think of is that your signiture stands out too much...that blue font is too distracting!!

Good work, keep it up!!

Thanks for all the comments guys.

OK taking all your suggestions on board I have had a little play around with the original image and came up with this:-

Yes the 'duck-thing' has gone (this was in fact a hooded merganser)!

How's it look now?

I would like to feature some more birds in my 52 although whether any more of our feathered friends make it depends on the themes! I'm not quite sure how a 'GRUNGE' bird would look!:exit:

I don't hold a season ticket to Pensthorpe - even though we tend to go 3 or 4 times a year it still wouldn't pay to get one.

Very nice photo Chris. The edit is great although it is a little tight in the frame. Not much you can do about that though

Thanks John. It's all part of the learning curve I guess. It has been a good way to learn new techniques which I can carry forward into the remaining 51.

Week 2 - Poetry

I picked this poem:

"I'm not a cosy pussy cat, nor hamster in a cage,
Nor a proud Alsatian dog, for that is far too big.
I'm a kind of snuggle bug, loved by kids of any age,
A cutie cobbed shaped cavy kind, they call a Guinea Pig.

Try me and I think you'll find I'm rather nice
I can charm and I can calm and make of you, a friend
But be warned that I'm forever, not for once or twice,
For you will fall, they always do, and love me in the end.

Peter Gurney."

...and this picture:

This was to practise photo editing and processing, so this has a focal blur and a bit of colour correction thrown in. This is little Goldie enjoying a snuggle in one of our sleeping bags while I was cleaning his home out.

Thoughts??

You need a cute/fluffy creature warning on your thread now. He/she is delightful and there isn't a thing I would change about your treatment. Absolutely lovely

Sooooooooooooo cute !!! and the poem matches perfectly.

I missed your thread last week (easy to do when there's so damn many!)

The swan pic is nice - fits the theme beautifully

Love the week 2 picture though - he looks so snug!

Beautiful soft focus effect Chris, yet all the Hammy's details are still there. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Cheers, Rob

Comment for Week 1:

Well exposed, pity about the duck in the top left corner though.

Comment for Week 2:

Are you in a hurry? Nice image although perhaps a little warm, suits the poem and theme well though!

that is absolutely lovely!!! :)

the image is so fitting of how GPs are - soft & shy, and the colours are just spot on for me.

Your curved shot is a great start and the edit is the better although, as pointed out, its a little tight in the frame, the exposure (I always find tricky with swans) is spot on!

Your poetry shot is fantastic - talk about cute :D Colours, details and the softness of the shot are fabulous!

Really like your week two image and it goes along with the poem perfectly!

The red cushion frames him nicely and works well with the tad red around his eyes :D

Brilliant!

Awwww Chris, that is one of the cutest things I've ever seen

The softening effect has worked brilliantly without losing Piggy's details and I love the warm colours.

Only possible suggestion for improvement would be to watch out for shadows - the shadow of his nose is just going over the red of the cushion on the RHS. With the PP that you've applied it doesn't actually detract from the shot at all, but it's maybe something to watch for in future.
For this particular image though, I wouldn't change a thing

I like this one Chris - completely different to the swan, more appealing too :D Loving the soft focus and the compostion too, need a word more cute than cute to describe it!

Arthur

Chris, I missed the first week, sorry. Curved, excellent shot of the swan, but I agree about the duck, I'm glad you posted the second one, it's much better. As for the Poem, really good, and the image suits it perfectly... what a cutie

Well for week 3 chopped, I had a couple of goes at this, based around the twice daily pet feeding cycle.

I decided on this one:-

I did also try this one, but it doesn't do so much for me:-

Both very good shots, I prefer #2 Chris out of these, what is the pet out of curiosity?

I like both of these Chris

Vignetting is one of those effects that really gets overused IMO, but you've put it to great effect on these shots.
I love the spotlight effect on shot no.1, but no.2 gets it for me with that dreamlike feel. What PP did you use on that?

I like both of them, although I too prefer the second shot... I think it's a more interesting shot. The soft blur on both works nicely.

The spotlight effect was acheived using one of our kitchen worktop spotlights, but with the main kitchen lights switched off. I then added a focal black & white and focal softening to the images.
