Hi,

Im looking for some help with settings for the Birmingham Chirstmas
parade and light switch on. I will be hand held as i will be following the
parade around the route so using a tripod is out the question.
I will be using the Nikon D5100 and it will be night time.

Which would be the best settings for this project?

Assuming that the answer is no to the flashgun question and that you have the kit lens then see below....

Manual Mode
ISO - 1600
Aperture - f5.6
Shutter Speed - 1/5th sec
Flash ON

If your subjects are looking over exposed drop the ISO to 800 and / or narrow your aperture to F8

Similar settings that I used to use in a nightclub gig I used to do.

Oh and set white balance to either auto or Tungsten. If shooting in RAW ignore this bit!

:eek::eek::eek:

Sits back and grabs the popcorn....

TBH there isn't one setting that will cover all low light situations, some parts maybe darker and vice versa, you'll have to adjust accordingly.

yeah and all the very best of luck with the wedding receptions ;)

I think you will have real problems hand holding at 1/5th of a second, if this is the shutter speed you want to use then you will need to brace the camera to a lamp post or alike.

But if he's using flash then surely the shutter speed is only controlling the ambient light and so hand holding shouldn't be a problem.

With the slow shutter speed any light in the frame will move as the lens moves and can look very unnatural, the flash he is using is built into his camera and may only be good for about 4-5m, shooting outside that can leave a lot not lit and at 1/5th that that is a lot of time for bright things in a parade to move, as in this image taken with flash and a shutter speed of 0.8 seconds the bright elements of the image are recorded

Aperture Priority
ISO1600/3200
then play with the aperture until you get 1/60 or over
