Hi,

I've recently been given my dad's old Chinon CE4 35mm SLR which he has had sitting in it's original box and case for some 25 years and I'd like to give it a try even though I'm more of a digital fan myself with owning a 450D and a EOS 1D mk2 and that I've never really used a film SLR properly for a long time. On reading various websites Fujifilm seems to be mentioned a lot with regards to quality, I like shooting portrait as well as B&W so what we be recommended here in this case? I'm confused by all the various types available for rich colours for landscape and their speed ratings etc.

Dude, thats the camera I've got :D Its a beast :) Really nice camera and built like a tank ain't it?

Not sure on what film to use m8 but if your going down a B&W route most shops cannot process standard Ilford films, they can do XP2 though I think.

Hi,

Yes it is built like a Volvo for sure!! :D I've yet to get any film for it(although I have been looking at some of the Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 series film as I love B&W photography, and I love that high contrast processed look. I also have an external flash unit which my dad bought for it which works fine too...stupid question but with the exposure dial on the left..does it have to be set to match the exposure rating of the film that's inserted all the time..as from reading the manual it also provides exposure compesation + and - several stops. There is also the exposure override tab...what would this be used for?

Here it is with it's original box(albeit slightly worn) with external flash unit and original leather case!!:

Best buy a roll of Ilford XP2 or Fuji Neopan CN - these both use C-41 colour processing system so you can get a tets roll developed at Asda or the like to confirm it all works as it should (shutter speeds, meter etc).

After that Ilford HP4+ or HP5 are good all round B&W films, just factor in processing costs if you aren't DIYing.

For what it's worth a lot of the working parts are Pentak (so my repairer tells me) so there shouldn't be a big problem getting parts if it dies, one point to remember is the camera is totally battery dependant so carry spares. Wayne
