Hi Guys,

I think most of us do it...but I have now stopped it !

Chimping...Chimping is using the camera's LCD screen to see what has been shot !

We all have seen photographers sitting along one of the advertising boards on one of the sidelines at a sport event. But soon they would all bow their heads in unison, not in prayer but to squint into the LCD screens on the backs of their digital cameras.

I stopped doing it now...because its the perfect way to miss the shot. Also I have seen people get ran over by 300lb rugby player at a game, or a horse missing a jump and going into a group of photographers because they weren't paying attention !

So do you still chimp ???

Paul

I try to stop but i just cant help it, will someone set up a support group to help us dirty chimpers to stop. HELP.

Yep, but not every shot. Since I started using manual mode more I check the histogram every so often to make sure the light hasn't changed on me. I'll also check it when shooting people/groups to make sure I didn't get any blinkers ;)

I chimp, but only a quick chimp for a quick glance, and mainly to check the histogram.

It's a shame there's no option to increase the size of the histogram on the 30, and reduce the image size :D

Having upgraded to a 1d from my 5 I am now chimping more. The smaller screen means I need to be more careful especially when using flash.

I can probably claim to be the highest chimper as I often do it at 6,000ft!

But Paul, I am never claiming to NOT chimp. Oh no, no, no :nono: I think Dod's on to you ;)

You too Marcel. :nono: :D

Chimping is more looking at your screen, jumping around making loud noises and pointing it out to your friends. I wouldn't say a quick glance to check you got that shot you wanted was.

Guilty as charged..:bonk:

I dont chimp, instead of chimping to see if i got the shot i just got O.T.T and take 10+ shots of the same thing just to ensure i get one goodun.

have to agree with above .. histogram is there for a reason i think...

and blinkers as said...

The definition from Wikipedia:

"Chimping is a term used in digital photography (especially when using a digital single-lens reflex camera or DSLR) to describe the habit of checking every photo on the on-camera display (LCD) immediately after capture.

Usage varies depending on context and the person using it, but common uses include:

when a photographer’s sounds and actions of reviewing frames on-scene appear similar to the actions of an excited monkey. (Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!)
when a photographer is completely absorbed in the act of admiring a photo or proudly showing it off to others.
by experienced photographers to describe the actions of "wannabe" photographers.
Having several digital photographers together will result in group chimping either during or after the event they are shooting. This is similar to actual chimpanzee grooming, which is a social activity."

When I'm working at a car rally after each car passes I do it and delete the crap shots which by now are not many but a few do go and I LOVE IT.

EDIT IN CAMERA...................

I can honestly (;)) say I don't ... :suspect:

Not that I don't want to you understand ... ... I just take pics without my glasses and cannot see the screen to do anything with it so don't bother trying ... :D

I'm a County Class chimper. :D

Never took it up when I changed over. So. No chimping here. If it aint right - tuff.

I chimp just to check the histogram but not after every shot.

I regularly check the histogram to see if the meter is doing what it's supposed to or if I'm working in manual that I've got the exposure nailed. If I'm doing formals at a wedding I will have a quick check for blinkers and composition. But most shots I just shoot away without checking as there often isn't time in the heat of the moment.

I'm a chimper and proud of it!

I chimp to check the histogram.

I chimp to check my composition.

I'm not a "Spray and pray" photographer - I take time - I care - I chimp - so there :D

I'm like Venomator, well almost anyhow. I shoot with my glasses on and then can't see the screen with them. Besides I never did get into the habit, however I will review some pics if someone asks.... I still can't see them then either.:bang: Must start looking at this histogram thing though.:rules:

David.

While I can understand if 'chimping' only referred to the people who make monkey like noises when reviewing pictures, but if it also refers to just checking images, then guilty as charged. :D

If you don't check whether you are getting the images you expect, then you may as well shoot film. ;) The screen is there for a reason.

possibly its the nine pints of lager talking but that is a good point redhead, if we don't use the screen we may aswell shoot film!!!! use any advantage you can!!!!!

I still try to chimp when occasionally using film LOL!

*Click - chimp - "DOH!"

Chimping - sitting around eating breakfast in McDonalds and 'oh oh'ing at LCD screens? YES!! I chimp, though not at at every shot, usually checking a batch every so often in a quiet moment and to quickly delete any rubbish OOF stuff and check histograms.

chimpers be proud!! :p :woot:

If I'm doing landscapes or portraits, then I do check the screen. During action takes I always just try to catch the action cos it's easily missed.

Guilty :| but i dont make noises ... i just check to see if its all gravy

and that vid on chimping is so funny! (Y)
