I put up one of those purpose built squirrel feeders................the Grey was raiding the sunflower hearts bird feeder to which I added an anti-squirrel dome.

The Grey eventually found the feeder and I noticed she(?) was coming at least once a day but the food is now dropping that much quicker.............hungry methinks! However this morning we spotted a woodmouse (we have seen this/these in the garden before over the past couple of years).

It mounted the trellis post and was in under the hinged lid that the squirrel has to lift to reach the food. Looking in there I see a good number of empty sunflower and corn kernel husks, which I surmise is the mouse activity. The rate of drop suggests it has been a frequent caller the past two or three days.

The feeder is one with a clear perspex window but with a gap at the top, I am thinking of dropping in an extra bit of perspex to close the gap as afterall the squirrel has learned to lift the lid but with the gap 'closed' hopefully the mouse will not be able to get in?

Check out Winterwatch (BBC 2) to see how clever the mice are at solving the puzzle of finding the food :D

I was saying the SWMBO that the rodent test on the *-*Watch programs indeed does show how 'clever' they are we did see the mouse maze on Ep1...and.....Ep2 is on the recorder. If I can close the gap I am hoping the weight of the lid/flap will the defeat the little blighter ;)

If you can get a pencil in a gap, a mouse can get in too. (obviously not at the same time :D )

They definitely are clever little critters. Fun to watch too.
