Howdy,

I was wondering how others check on usage - of course for online usages it has become a lot easier but I was more interested in other offline usages. Of course I could wait until the big fat pay check drops through the door with the long list of usages *cough cough* ..but that doesn't help when trying to keep a clippings archive etc ...

I note that some agencies seem to do a very good job of tracking usage - which is a nice touch.

Do you buy the papers each day and look through / or perhaps stand around in various newsagents browsing .. until getting asked to leave? Or do you wait until you get some $$ ?

cheers,

Nige

Not really doing jobs that require this anymore - I know some agencies get access to online viewing of all the papers, so they don't have to go looking for papers at the local supermarket every day.
Other photographers say that by including their bank details to the IPTC data - the papers pay them without them having to keep an eye on things.

I think if you shoot 'on spec' and do need to invoice the paper when you see the usage - you will have to do it for a long time and have a great memory. As who knows, that image you took at Arsenal vs West Ham in 2005.. well a newspaper might decide that it suits their article in 2020.
Would you still remember your own photos from 15 years ago if you saw it on a quick browse at newsagent??

So I do wonder how many times newspapers do 'get away' with using an image and not having to pay for it??

If you work for an agency an honest owner would help

I once had access (via a borrowed getty password, shushhhh) to a website which had PDF's of every single National paper in the country and most Regional papers within a couple of hours of their publication, the website still exists somewhere but i think you need an account with a mojor agency to access it and access is only granted from a registered IP address so even if you did have a password you still couldn't get in.

The way i started was looking through them all in the news agents, and a lot of people still do. There is indeed a website where you can view pdf's of all the pages.

Even if you put your payment details in the IPTC a lot of papers can still miss paying you, so its always worth checking.
