Today we went to our Sainsburys fuel station to get some fuel, we always pay by card at the pump but today it went back to the insert card message after we had input the pin, it did this twice so in the end we paid in the shop, tonight whilst checking the bank online, my wife noticed that we had been charged 2 x £1 one for each time I tried to use the Pay at Pump.
If no one else has picked up on this, how much must they be making because the cashier in the shop said it happens all the time at our fuel station and its a new station so should not error when fuelling.

Be sure to check again, £1 small transactions can be feelers for someone trying to steal your money, probably not but worth a check or two over the coming days

Is it a clear payment or simply a reduction in the available balance (called a pre-authorisation) ? If the latter they may well disappear after 3 to5 days.

It simply says Debit £1 Sainsburys twice so we think its pre authorisation but we are waiting to see if they pay it back, I doubt its a scam John, there is absolutely no way anyone could put a card reader on the new machines, but we will keep an eye on our bank just in case its the latest RF scam

You'll be surprised how small the readers are and how unnoticable they are. We had one on our local Tesco express. When staff were alerted to the device, which had become partially unstuck, two gys appeared, grabbed it and made off in a van - false plates said the police.

Retailers often make test payments before they put the main payment through, these show up on my online statements as pending and disappear after a few days. I would check with your card company.

As others have said, it's just a pre auth.
Fairly standard, they can't actually charge the exact amount until you have finished filling up so they effectively test your card works ok by smashing a quid on it to pre authorise it, thereby making sure you have a valid card before you actually fill up.

Not sure what would happen if you only have £1 in the account and then put £50 of fuel in as your card has already gone through.
