Snapped this off the telly, some guy at London Fashion Week or summink. Now that is a fab light

I think he has four or maybe five guns on there, firing into a giant DIY RayFlash-style device. Shouldn't be hard to fabricate really.

It's obviously pretty wonderful in that situation, but also imagine something like that for strobisty stuff outside - great light, plenty of power from multiple guns, and, it won't blow away!

A triangular one with three guns would be quite cool. Why doesn't somebody make one? Garry?

Interesting, but not commercially practical...
It couldn't be made as a true ringflash because the length of the flash tube would mean (apart from the cost) that the flash duration would be incredibly long.
And if it was made as a 'Strobist' accessory then it would rely on customers using several identical flashguns and, as people always bodge and would use a mixture, the light would be uneven.
And it would be uneven anyway, it would end up as just a few flashguns with a diffuser 'connecting' them up, it wouldn't be a real ringflash and wouldn't produce real ringflash effects.

So, it's an interesting idea but it can only really work as a DIY job

Defeatist!

Anyone prepared to go to those kind of lengths to fabricate something, and maybe shoehorn four flash guns (costing over £1k) into service, would propbably be prepared to pay two or three hundred quid for something properly made. Maybe not a big seller, but I think a lot of folks might like one.

Yes, it would have to be a diffuser-style RayFlash/Orbis type thing, but they deliver damn good light - just not very much of it. However, four big guns would put out plenty of light, and you could retain auto-TTL control with a bit of optical light pipe feeding signals off the master gun.

The other application is the outside stobist one, where folks stear clear of brollies and softboxes because the damn things catch the wind and blow over. This wouldn't have that problem.

On a related subject, how about a strip flash tube, like a straight ring flash? Could be two or three feet long, and would give very soft light with an 'interesting' twist. Then get three of those and form them into a big triangle. That would be fantastic, not too heavy and easily portable. Similar to the guy in the pic. Lencarta could make that like falling off a log. I'd buy one! :D

Edit: make it curved instead of straight, then clip them together into a giant circle?

They do exist at the top end of the market, bron makes one iirc.

Well those things don't use hot-shoe guns and do auto-TTL metering and pass the barn-door-in-a-gale test and you can't see through them to work.

Guess I'm gonna have to make my own. Then you'll all be sorry

I saw an article years ago where someone had 12, yes 12 580EX's mounted around a square frame.

I've got two 580's, 550, and 2x sb 28's... I rather fancy trying something like that. I rather junk the 28's and get a 580 though and place the speedlites at 90deg intervals.

Wonder how the pics came out though...?

Maybe I'm also attracted to the idea because I've already got x4 580EX guns :naughty:

go engineer the f*** out of those flashes then!!! :D Else I'm gonna!
