Tempted by the new HP 24" monitor as welll.... :help:

Nice Spec

That should keep you going for a while, I have the Q9300 and have finally got round to installing Vista 64 bit (was running XP Pro), what a difference the machine behaves itself now :)

one other thing to get for it is a internal usb 2 card, you can never have enough even with 5 extra sockets i still run out and most of the hubs are useless :)

Do you intend on using software that is optomised for quad core processors?
If not, I would suggest perhaps a Gigabyte P35 chipset motherboard (base model is only a few quid more than the one you have chosen), an Intel Core 2 E8400 or E8500 CPU and an Artic freezer 7 pro CPU cooler (the cooler gets very good reviews).
With the E8400 you can overclock it to 3.6 without any problems and the E8400 will go to 3.8.

I am also a fan of Asus motherboards as well but I'm not sure how well the Asus PK5 series overclocks.

With the Vista index rating, my Q6600 overclocked to 3.0ghz was rated at 5.9 and my E8400 overclocked to 3.6ghz is rated at 5.8
Yes it's .1 slower but with the faster front sided bus of the E8400 and the extra 600mhz, the E8400 certainly is quicker with all the various benchmarks I have run when comparing the two CPU's.

Oops, perhaps I am a bit too late

I agree with the Samsung HDD's, they've done well with reviews.
I used to be a Seagate fan but they are quite noisy.
They sell very well work at work and I am using a pair in this box.
Samsung burners, ace, I've got the same model in this box and we've used them 90% of the time in the PCs we build and sell at work (for the last 4.5 years) and the failure rate isn't even worth mentioning.

I ummed and ahhhd about going dual core or quad core, and the difference seemed to be slight. I often run multiple apps at the same time, so I ended up with quad core.

Thanks for your advice though. :)

Pump that CPU upto 3.0 :D

In this case (geddit?) the PSU is a 'proper' one, that is actually sold separately for £53. :)

Indeed, the Piano Black's come with a decent aPFC PSU, which will be absolutely fine for that build.

I built something similar last year. Works well. I put a cheaper graphics card in it and it would still run COD4. Everything else it flies.
Asus board
Sonata case (stock psu)
Quad6600 inc stock fan
Radeon 2400
Samsung 500gb hdd
Asus Rewriter
Really happy with it:thumbs:
It uses a Samsung 22" monitor, which looks fab, but needs some claibrating to work with CS, etc properly

Bit late now but the only other thing I would of added would of been a lightscribe CD/DVD drive. It's quite useful for labelling CD's and looks quite professional.

Well, it's almost built! It posts fine and everything seems ok in the BIOS. With the case on it's side and the CPU fan on Q-mode it doesnt make any noise at all! Boding well....

However I cant finish the build at the mo cos I need two cables:

1. Another SATA cable for the 2nd HDD
2. A PS/2 to USB adapter - the motherboard only has a PS2 port for a keyboard not for a mouse.

I'm going out to try maplin for the above shortly! :)

I might order the HP 24" today too.....:naughty:

Nice spec, but If you're gonna be storing lots of images a 2nd HDD would be a good idea. Its also perfect for use as a scratch disk in Photoshop . . .

Hi there

If you check the actual order I made above you will see that I've got a 320gb and a 750gb. I'm also going to put in an old 320gb from my old machine. :)

Anyway, its all up and running now! I'm using it as we speak. Just got to get all the software downloaded and installed now....

Nice one.
I hope you've used some cable ties and made a nice tidy job of them.
