So what is the best way to check for sensor dust and scratches?

I have a second hand D7000, described as in new condition, arriving today and would like a good effective to way to check the sensor for dust & scratches.

I know I could do a google or watch some YouTube videos but there are so many and they all vary to some degree or other.

So here I am asking all you good people of TP how would you do it?

All assistance will be greatly appreciated

I know @Cobra has a great picture on how to clean the sensor on the camera ;)

I've found setting the camera to a small aperture and taking a photo a smooth white wall works. Doing the same with a clear blue sky works too and suspect any smooth pale coloured surface would work.

I've also read setting a small aperture and a long shutter speed works. The idea being camera shake during the long exposure will blur the background but the dust, which moves with the camera, will show up clearly but I have not tried this method.

f/as big a number as possible, plain, pale wall, defocussed. In a PP programme/app, boost contrast and zoom right in then scroll all over the shot. If you see any splodges moving, note where they are and see if they're on other similar test shots.
