Hi all,

I'm looking around for my first flashgun, I typically shoot motorsport but need a flash for fill in on grid shots, podiums and other candids of drivers. I am also shooting a family wedding in just over a month's time so need something suitable for that.
I don't have a massive budget so was looking at non canon branded flashes, I think I need ttl/ettl to do the metering until I get more time to play around with manual power settings etc. I also believe I'll need something with tilt/swivel head and difuser/bounce card to help with wider angles and fill in which nearly all seem to have. Not sure I understand enough about other features like sync speed, second curtain options and wireless and I'd likely not get anything with these features in my price range anyway. To do wireless on a budget I think I'd need radio triggers and set the flash manually, wireless ettl is pricey or doesn't work over standard radio triggers?

Having looked around most of the ones I've found that I *think* could be suitable are mostly sub £100 but with a lowish guide number which is I guess what you'd expect for the money etc. Will these be suitable and is there anything I've missed or features that put one above the rest of my selection or others that I should consider? Only other thing I can think of that might affect usage is recharge time between shots.

I've been looking at:
Yongnuo 468
Nissin Di466 or 622
Sunpak PZ42X
Jessops 360AFD

Sigma, Metz and Canon don't seem to have anything with the features I need in pricerange?

thanks,

Andrew.

Since you'll be shooting outdoors, HSS would be worth having.

I had the Sunpak, wouldn't recommmend it, was slow to recycle and no decent swivle.
I would save a little more and get the Di866 or a used 430exii

Looking at getting the 430EX myself so it would get my vote.

All ready have have a 580ex and looking for a new backup will buy a second hand one do have another older metz as a back as well.

All the best

You will certainly find high speed sync very useful for those applications, ie day light fill-in. None of the guns you've listed has it.

Canon 430EX/EXII (has no built-in bounce card), 580EX/EXII, the bigger Nissin, or Metz 50 AF-1 is a very nice gun that gets good reviews. The only cheaper gun I know of with HSS is the little Canon 270EX, which is a great little gun for basic on-camera stuff, but only has tilt, not swivel.

Maybe a used 430EX/EXII would fit budget?
