Yes
So been looking at the 600d with a normal lens that it comes with but wanted to know for a newbie would it be cheaper to buy the body and get a cheapy lens to go with it?

usually if you are looking at a typical kit lens then buying as a kit is the way to go.

If you wouldn't use the kit lens but something else then buy body only (or you could buy the kit & sell on the kit lens).

It depends how much you wish to spend. The kit lenses are reasonable and the 55-250 in particular is good for that magnification.
There are better wide angle lenses or a good quality carry around lens you could buy instead. There is nothing really cheaper than the kit lenses though.

You're unlikely to find a cheaper lens than the kit 18-55 that is useful on a day to day basis. Just get that lens to start. As and when you find that lens limiting, then consider buying other lenses.

I'd opt for the body and kit lens (18-55IS) and you'll be fine - I doubt you'd find it cheaper seperately.

The 55-250IS lens is a good one to look at - this is where I would make sure of the price difference - as it can be cheaper to buy seperately rather than a 2 lens kit...

Good luck ...

I don't know the specific camera/lens combination yuo're looking at, but I bought the D90/18-105mm kit and really regretted it. I totally wish I'd saved a few quid by not getting the kit lens, and spent more on a decent zoom. The only saving grace of the whole transaction was that someone persuaded me to get the 50mm/f1.8 as a "treat" to myself, and it hasn't been off my camera since.

IMveryHO, kit lens is a completely false economy.

Depends on what you intend to shoot I suppose. If the kit lens won't allow you to capture the photographs you wish to it'd be better value to buy a body & a lens of your own choosing. I did this when upgrading in October 2010 & I'm pleased I never went with a kit! It's down to individual needs I guess.

If I'd have thought it through, I'd have bought a kit last time out rather than body only - even as a not-noob - simply because I could transplant the kit lens on to the old body that I was selling and sell that to a noob as a kit... considering the difference in price was something like £20, that would have been the sensible thing to do. Even if I didn't have a body to sell, the kit lens would be a handy "disposable" lens that I didn't mind trashing at £20.

Oh well, there's always next time....
