Ok so I own a Canon Powershot A630 and have been bitten by the bug. Since I do a lot of nature photography i would like to elongate the zoom a little bit and so I'm thinking of buy a teleconverter lens. This brings me to my current dilema. Should I go with the Canon recommended lens (TC-DC58N, which is only 1.5X power. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-TCDC58N..._bbs_sr_1/102-9292469-6491322?ie=UTF8&s=photo) or the HD 3X telephoto lens (http://www.amazon.com/TELEPHOTO-LEN...f=sr_1_24/102-9292469-6491322?ie=UTF8&s=photo)

Also, if I chose the HD would the clarity of picture suffer badly?

I have searched for any reviews of the HD but cannot find any and they say that the 1.5X teleconverter has terrible vingetting. So may I get some advice from someone knowing more than I do. (PS, I know in photography that you get what you pay for but I needto keep the cost down and so the $70 price tag on the HD is looking very appealing.)

I do not have experiance with the lenses in question but I did have the same questions when I owned a Canon A80.

The superzoom non Canon lenses are usually cheap and suffer from distortions and degrade image quality. I would bet large wods of cash this will be the case with any of them.

I know the canon does not seem to be very powerful but it will work properly and only slighty (if any) degrade the image quality. 1.4 is probably the limit your compacts lens will take before degradation and therefore why canon don't offer a stronger converter.

Vignetting usually only affects wide angle. Not sure how or why this would be the case with a teleconverter.

:agree:

The vignetting can come about with a poorly corrected lens (internal lens arrangement) at any extreme length, in this case it will be the combination of lenses.

Thanks for the reply guys, you've swung my choice back to the Canon for the moment.

Well I decided to save up the money and purchase decent add-on lenses (or a dlsr depending on my future financial status).

But I did purchase a few Christmas goodies for myself.
-Adapter Tube for Canon A610/620 52mm
-52mm Filter Stacker
-52mm Hoya Green Label Circular Polarizer Filter
-52mm Kenko Softon Filter
-52mm Hoya Standard Coated Orange (G) Filter

Which only came out to $70 including shipping.

These are going to be basic building blocks for photo's of nature, portraits, and general color enhancing. Are there any other essential filters that you may suggest (other than UV)?
