Hey all TP members,

I challenge you to show me a sharp shot taken with a cheap telephoto lens. I have a 90-300 and its a nightmare, nearly every shot is out of focus.

The Rules:

The lens must have been purchased for under £200 new

The shot must be voted by everyone else as sharp.

No photo editor sharpening !

So can somebody please prove me wrong and show me a sharp shot taken with a cheap lens

Ok...

I'd like to put this forward:

70-300 f4.5 - 5.6 Nikor, bought as a kit with an F55 & 28-100 lens for £199, so it's well in your bracket:

Both shot with the Sigma 70-300 apo dg macro.

Sorry about the disorganisation but ive added another rule that i totally fogot, no sharpening using photo editing software, kinda defeats the point dont you think ...

But RAW files generally need a sharpen anyway, as they're not sharpened in camera like JPG's are

Hmmm it was just put in place to make sure people were not just going to oversharpen shots...

This was shot at 149mm with the Sigma 70-300 Apo dg. Hand Held ;)

Crop from a Nikon 70-300 G zoom- not sure on the new price but I paid 80 quid on e-bay. I sold it due to unacceptable colour fringeing (chromatic abberation) when pointed anywhere near a highlight! The Nikon ED 80-200 F2.8 that replaced was a revelation.

Not bad for sharpness- just no good for my over critical eye! Look carefully at the white feathers in the centre of the owls forehead- they have purple edges- not a good sign.

It was a Tamron 75-300 on a Canon 30D. In camera JPEG just resized and uploaded.

You might have to cut and paste the link - sorry I'm not having much luck with this.

This is a great idea but isn't the sharpness going to depend on how close you get to the telephoto end?

Tamron AF 28-300mm XR Di LD Aspherical Macro IF f3.5-6.3 on a 300D. EXIF is in the image

Shot was hand held & the bird moved so the focus point ended up on the top of the beak (should have been the eye :()

//edit// Shot was in RAW, processed with sharpening turned off

Full Frame (just resized)

Taken on a Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro
1/125 sec - f5.6 - focal length = 300mm

Some great shots on here! KenCo, the spaniel shot is superb, reminds me of our old one.

Canon EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III USM

The pictures themselves are 2 star in my lightroom collection, so really aren't up to much in terms of merit. But they give a decent indication of what you can expect form the lens. I'm quite happy with it. There's a slight problem with chromatic aberration at the long end, but nothing that can't be sorted in PS/Lightroom. It's hardly L glass, but for £90 second hand, who's comparing.

These were shot on my old 350d iirc too, ISO's ranging from 1-400, all hand held. See exif for exact details (should be intact).

best start saving

The Sigma 70-300 DG APO again handheld. Great for the money (£109 from One Stop Digital). No software voodoo except the colour levels...

Just to say, I have a canon EF 90-300mm F4.5-5.6 and have been very happy with the clarity although I'm on film and have only printed 7x5" at the moment. Maybe yours is faulty?

Tamron 70-300mm at £100.00, oh and as can be seen this copper's eyes locked onto me snapping away at far longer than 300mm :lol:

I have a Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro lens, bought as part of a package, but currently £199.99 in jessops (cheaper elsewhere probably).

No editing done on this other than shrinking it down to fit using GIMP (I am yet to decide what image editor to use)

I own the EF 75-300mm, bought it almost a year ago for my 400D, think it cost me £150 posted from Amazon. I've honestly hardly ever used it, but the few shots i have taken with it have been clear. I took a picture of a flower type thing from around 10ft away, it's got awesome depth of field and is sharp, i'll post it up once i'm back at home.

Would recommend the 75-300mm lens though definatly.

I'll stick in another vote for the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO DG Macro then....I'm afraid this has been sharpened - it's too old for me to still have the original image easily accessible and I no longer use the lens having replaced it with the Canon 70-200.

Some truly superb shots on this thread - really goes to show what these low-end lenses are capable of in the right hands.
