I'm after a bit of advice,I would love a home studio but money and space won't allow it, I do however have 3 canon flash guns, 2x 430 1x550
If I was to buy a backdrop should I expect to get reasonable results and also what would be the largest soft boxes I could get away with having not that much power in the guns.
I wouldn't be planning on shooting big groups

Thanks in advance

You don't need a massive amount of space for singles and couples. I use mu living room which is big enough for a 6x7 hilite and three studio lights (Elinchrom)

I use a 53" softbox although that might be too big for a single flash. You can always buy a lastolite bracket where you can attach more than one flash to fire through a large softbox but you may not need that.

Look for a 24" or 36" softbox for head and shoulders and 3/4 body.

Do do you think I might get away with a 36" softbox with 1speedlite

Depends what you want to achieve. Yes you can take some cracking shots with one light and a brolly.

With 3 speedlites, a background and soft boxes or umbrellas yes you can get good results :)

I meant to add - Look up the Zack Arias web site. His "one light" DVD is worth a look. Really excellent stuff.
