Hi folks.

I have just upgraded from the nikon d300 to the 700 and until i sell the d300 and lens collection, can anyone suggest a good secondhand walkabout lens that will not let me down????

thanks all.

Ben.

Yes ... the 28-105 f3.5 / f4.5 AF D, some info on this thread from the other day LINK

Around £100 used

Don't know if you are a fan, but Ken Rockwell has some very cheap recommendations in his FX lens recommendations

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3/lenses.htm

if you read the walkabout section he's keen on the Nikon 28-80 G and the 28-200 G as good performing cheapos. £50 on eBay for the 28-80 G? Bit flimsy, but will tide you over until you get your 24-70!!

50mm F1.8 it can do just about everthing :)

Apart from other focal lengths! As I've said before, footzoom is great but not always an option! A great choice for someone who only needs a single FL though. Or, indeed, someone who occasionally wants low light capability. In fact, my copy has a permanent place in the bag beside...

My choice would be (and was) a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. Way cheaper than the Nikkor equivalent, and bought from bricks'n'mortar you can always test it before you buy it and reject any that are problematic.

This ^

If you head out with only a 50mm, you just manage. You don't miss the zoom when you know you just don't have it. It can be liberating to just not worry about stuff in the distance or worry about getting a wider angle on something. Just .... shoot and move. So light and fun to use.

28-105 f3.5 / f4.5 AF D

i had one nice lens with the macro and that but i found the 50mm lens more useful on walkabout and when i went inside etc.

Another vote for 50mm f1.8...thats what is currently sitting on the front of my D700

thanks for all your help guy's. found a nice Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm F/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR.

just need to get a hood and filter for it.....

Ben.

Hi andy. how bad is it??? reviews I find are ok, but if I can find a normal person who has used one that a better view for me....

Not spectacularly bad but not stellarly good, either. Mine came as the kit lens when I bought my D700 but got traded in (along with an old 170-500 Sigma) against a 150-500 OS Sigma - IIRC, I got more on trade in than the lens cost me over the body only cost of the D700 - result!

Slightly soft in the corners when close to fully open, not particularly fast, knocked into a cocked hat by my copy of Sigma's 24-70, although that is shorter at the long end and not stabilised.

Hi nod. thanks for that. I'll give it a try while i wait for something better. as for the sigma, I am watching a couple on the dreaded bay, the lack of stabilization wouldn't bother me as 99% of the time the camera is on a pod of some type!!!

thanks for that. Ben.

Hi all.

ok, so I'm not getting the 24-120 now, but have found a Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 AF-D IF ED.

is this an FX lens and is it any good??/

It's better than that 24-120, they are FX unless they say DX.

Thom Hogan rated that one HERE

Ben, I would suggest that e-bay is probably not the best place to buy a 2nd hand Sigma. If all reports are to be believed, there are loads of dodgy copies (soft/misaligned etc) and where else are people likely to offload them? ("Sorry, mate, it was perfect when I sent it to you, you must have dropped it!") Yes, a dealer will probably be a bit dearer but will almost certainly offer a warranty. Buying in person from a dealer (or collecting and testing from a 'bayer) is the best way to go IMO.

I do own a Nikon 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 and its a decent sharp setup if you don't want to carry pro zooms. But again I prefer primes to zooms and this lens shines when I'm not in mood to change lenses especially on hiking and travel.;)

Never used that one the D is cheaper and very, very good.
I was selling mine but decided to keep it as it was so cheap it was pointless selling it.
I also have a 1.4 which I use for rock and roll.:)

Ok cheers :)

50mm lens 1.8 or 1.4 both razor sharp and give a very natural field of view.

The 1.8G has better optics than the 1.8D, 1.4D and 1.4G...

The Nikon 24-85 AFS (older, non-VR) is quite good for the money. Mine cost me £100 used, a couple of years ago. It still gets an occasional outing on my D800. I'd choose it over a 50mm prime for walkabout use any day due to its versatility.

I agree with this, a very nice lens if you can get it for a good price.

I got this lens for £190 delivered. most others I saw were well over that!!!

I never look on eBay for photographic gear

Yes I don't know how I have managed without it those other 50s are tosh. :shake:

Oh I'm not saying any of them are garbage by any means, as I'm sure anyone would be happy with any of them. However, the 1.8G does have the newest technology in it (aspeherical element), plus is the sharpest out of the lot wide open.
