Hi all,

Just wanted some input on a lower price range compact that takes decent, simple pics. I had a fujifilm finepix F11 of Dads, a few years old think, and I preferred it to a newer one I have which got stolen :(

I have a problem with some of the newer compacts. They are so small, and because you can no longer look through a viewfinder, I find I take bad and blurry photos with one. I have a disability and holding a tiny camera at arms length to see the screen on the back means my hands are not steady... hence the blurry pics. Dad's older camera didn't seem as sensitive. I preferred the slightly larger compact. I don't want something that takes marvelous photos, just holiday snaps really.

For "serious" photos I have my SLR but need something smaller for week-ends away, something I don't constantly have to be "attached" to for fear of someone nicking it.

If you have any ideas on something that might be similar in feel to the finepix f11 I'd be very grateful and sorry, I really am very broke at the moment and just can't justify the expense of a pricey compact.

Thanks all :)

About that price range is right for now. I don't want to spend more really as I don't "need" the compact but looking at it the SX130 for example, it looks like something that might suit well.

the new canon powershot a1200 is quite a nice little thing, takes AA batteries so is a little chunkier (easier for me to hold)
as it is part of the cheaper end of their range it doesnt have an image stabilized lens but a bonus is it does a viewfinder, yey.

it's £80 at jessops

Looks good too and cheaper as well. I don't know how important the stabiliser is. I don't have one on the SLR and have never needed it but maybe I'm missing out on something. The chunkier hold is important to me too and I do much prefer a viewfinder. Getting great ideas here. Thanks everyone, there's so much out there on the market that it's a bit baffling with no guidance at all...

If it were me I would want a rechargeable battery, think how much you will spend on replacing those AA and how many shaots will you get ? check before you buy.

you can get a fuji F11 on the bay of e for about 80 odd notes - or its forerunner the f10 for about 50 odd notes

one good feature of these is that they have high endurance batteries that are rated for 1500 shots between charges ( Thats the marketting - the most ive ever had out of my F10 was 1200 but thats still pretty decent)

Energizer lithiums you should be looking in the region of 400+* shots.
Rechargables with a rating over 2700/2900 maH should get you about 150 shots which is roughly equal to the Li-ion batteries. you just have to remember a few old chargers won't fully charge the newer AA batteries. And decent chargers will charge them in an hour.

*my Canon A470 gets just over the 500 shots, but i do skimp on the usage (no playblack, no flash & turn it off as soon as the photo is taken)

Thanks all. Yes, I had thought of the battery problem and mean to look at that carefully before buying. I also thought of e-bay but so far haven't see anything that suits over here (I'm in Belgium). Haven't even had the "chance" to see mine ;)

If your looking at used, I have a Konica Minolta Diamge z10. Now it only 3mp, but its 8x optical, and pretty darn good. I also know that there are newer versions of the camera which were also good.

The unique thing about the camera is the shape . it is rather chunky, making it easy to grip - and you can use live view or the view finder as you can see in the shots here:
