I'm a bit stuck in deciding what setup to change over to at the moment.

Currently I'm using a Canon 40D with my main shooting lens being a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. I also have a 50mm f1.8 and a pretty standard 70-300mm f4-5.6.

My biggest disappointment is that I won't be able to use my Tamron lens on the 5D MKII due to the sensor size (?).

My main question really is this: What would be an equivalent lens at a more budget conscious price?
I'd be looking to raise roughly £500 from the sale of my 40D and Tamron lens to fund it, but wouldn't have much to spare!

The Tamron 17-50 is designed for APS-C sensors - it will physically fit on the 5D but you'll get vignetting at the edges, so effectively it's a no-go.

The best EF replacement to fit your budget would probably be the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. Same max aperture, and the focal length works out to roughly the same as your Tamron on a smaller sensor. Amazon currently do it for just under £570, and you can probably pick it up cheaper than that if you look around.

If you want the real deal and can save a bit more, the Canon 24-105L f/4 can be had for around £660 (including £80 cashback offer). This is a very nice lens - smaller aperture at f/4 but longer focal length, great as a general-purpose walkabout lens. It also has image stabilisation.

Hope this helps :)

I'd second the Tamron 28-75 SD lens, superb lens for the money and designed for full frame. I use mine on my 5d2 and 1d3 with great success.
