Hi all,

I have £300 pounds for christmas off my gran and dad so im going to kit out my camera with a decent tripod a bag batteries cards ect ect but what i would like to invest in is a new lens. I don't mind getting a second hand lens as long as its in my price range and is in working order. I would like a telephoto lens with at least 400mm reach as i already have a 300mm 5.6 but i find i dont have enough reach so i would like to invest in something a bit longer. I would like to stay around the £100 mark but i would go up to £150. Aperture minimum would have to be 5.6 the same as my 300 i dont think i could cope with anything smaller. Ok its hard but is it possible ive seen aload of sigma 400mm for canon EF on ebay around the £100 mark but specify they are for 35mm film so im not sure if they would fit my 400D. Also when shooting wildlife generally i only use manual focus.

Do you know anything that might be suitable ?

David,

I really think that anything within your specification of 400mm and f/5.6 would be of such low IQ as to be unusable if you could get it for anywhere near your budget.

There are cheap options on the market but don't buy blind, I'm sure you'd regret it.

On a technical note....you specify an aperture minimum of f/5.6. I think you mean maximum....smaller numbers refer to larger apertures as in "maximum f/2.8, minimum f/16". Speaking as per normal convention, that is.

Sorry to disagree on two points Bob but Davids limit if I've read it right is £150......which happens to be the exact price I payed for the very same lens on ebay a few months ago;)

£150 for that lens would be a bargain i will have to wait and see what crops up ! Cheers for the replys aswell !

Yes, sorry Eric....I was looking at the "stick around" figure of £100.
I'm suprised you managed to get one for that price...nice buy.

Yes, a real bargain. Throw your £150 bid in and see if the reserve is met. The sellers f/b is only 5 but you're protected upto £150 so relatively safe at that level.

Dammit - now I want to upgrade to the sigma - I was completely unaware of that lens!

Perhaps after christmas when I have an idea of how much money I have...

So much for saving up >_>

I think thats the lens for me, i am willing to go the extra £50 as long as i get my £50 cashback from my 400d

you should get your £50 cashback no problem but that lens won't be around for long!

I'd grab it now while you can David as I can't see it hanging around long at that price. You should have no problem with your £50 cash back from Canon;) It may take a while but they get there in the end.

I cant really grab it now, my dads cheque hasnt cleared !

Just incase you were unaware, the version above is not the latest model, infact its fairly old.
