Hi all,
Can anyone tell me the maximum transfer speed between an EOS 40D and a CF card.
I have trawled the internet looking for the answer and found out lots about the buffer size and how many pictures you can take in burst modes etc.
I'm trying to make a decision on which CF card I should get and if there is any performance difference that I would gain between a Sandisk extreme III and a San disk extreme IV card.
The Extreme III --- Min 20MB/second sequential read and write
The Extreme IV --- Up to 40MB/sec* sequential read and write

So if anyone can tell me the maximum transfer rate between the buffer on the 40D and the CF card that would be great.

I would have thought that it would be better to get the fastest you can as you still need to transfer to the putter from a card reader/camera.. but i should think that the camera would be fairly quick to read/write to card anyway..

I've got a SanDisk Ultra III 4Gb card, when i am using the 40D on highspeed shooting. The camera does take them quicker then it can write them. Its normally about 10 seconds after i've taken of them. However, i am taking it to the extreme. As i am taking about 17 shots in about 3 seconds.

I'd personally go for a IV card, I am going to update all my CF cards to Ultra IV after xmas :D

Hi mate!

Why didn't you let me know about updating your cards. I would have waited and bought yours :)

According to Amatuer Photographer no camera can write as fast as even Extreme 11 cards let alone the latest batch of even quicker Extreme 4 ;) That said it does make sense to buy the quickest you can afford, as it will always take longer to download to your Lappy or PC with a slower card :)

There quote was "no current DSLR camera can reach the speeds of transfer offerred by the latest cards, none can even reach the 166X of some of the slower CF Cards"

I usually just get the MyMemory branded ones 4gb for about £18 a pop. I've never worried about the buffer even doing race photography but I don't tend to shoot more than 3 frames in a burst anyway.

For jobs like weddings I always buy a new set which get tested and used for the wedding. Then they're stored as part of the backup for the job, never to be used again.
