Right so the D700 is on its way (hopefully)

Now i need some memory cards

Which one would you go for out of the following

Duracell

Lexar

Sandisk

Transcend

Personally for now I think I'm going towards the Sandisk, but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has any favouring views of the other brands

Thanks

Simon

You can't go wrong with Sandisk, but Transcend are very competitively priced, and most users of them on here would speak very highly of them. I've only used them, and have never had a problem with them.

I have a heap of sandisk CF cards from 4GB to 32GB and never had a problem.

I can't comment on the others.

I've used both Lexar and Sandisk and never had a problem with either brands.

I've got both Transcend and Sandisk. Neither give me problems and there are no noticeable performance difference between the two. Main difference is price, the Transcend were noticeably cheaper.

I've had no troubles with Sandisk since I started using them. :)

Just a little bit of info about memory card speeds,

80x = 12 Mbytes/sec
100x = 15 Mbytes/sec
200x = 30 Mbytes/sec
266x = 40 Mbytes/sec
300x = 45 Mbytes/sec

So if your camera and you were able to take advantage of the higher speed memory cards, the Duracell card in your list is the fastest.

I settled on the Sandisk Extreme as a good balance between speed and cost, but then I occasionally take lots of continuous pics of sport so sometimes need the speed.

I've put one of my Sandisk cards through the washing machine twice - and it still operates perfectly. I did however 'mark' it to ensure I knew it was the washed card - so I only use it on non-business events - but to have gone through that, it's a good card in my books, and never had a failure from any of the others - but do make sure you buy from a reputable source.. Don't buy from ebay.

Sandisk for me. Got a pocketful full of Extreme 3 and Ultra. Only ever use 4gig as I don't want to risk all on just one card. Get mine from Picstop.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm a little confused with the Sandisk Ultras

The Ultra says its 30Mb/s

and Ultra II says its 15Mb/s

I would have thought the Ultra II would have been faster or do Sandisk work backwards?

Cheers

Simon

Sandisk had a shuffle around with their name a little while back so it's possible you have an old ultra II and a newer Ultra.

If you want high speed, get the extreme but make sure it's the new one at 60MB/s

Do you need the speed is a good question, no good paying more unnecessarily.

Sandisk and transcend cards here.
7dayshop is a good place to start shopping for one!

I was thinking of going for the Duracells but i'm not 100% sure how relaible they are in comparison to the Sandisk

I would go with the Sandisk. Duracell is probably just a rebranded card of another card maker.

I've used lexar, sandisk and transcend. Lexar packed up ages ago. anyways, I find the Sandisk gives a little more punch to the photo's the contrast is just amazing..

Only kidding!

At the moment the sandisk extreme (udma) lives in the dslr most of the time until I run out of space then the 16gb transcend goes in. cant notice the difference in write speeds on the 50D, but then i have never really needed to use the whole buffer so...

Copying from the cards to the computer via card reader is also speedily.
Hope this helps..

Sam.

I'd never touch anything other than Sandisk or Lexar personally, just no reason to stray from these two very well-regarded brands.

Sandisk all the way, even though i had one failed whilst on holiday. It actually died, no cameras (5Dii, 30D, S70), 2 different card readers and 2 different computers can read it. Posted 1 thing on Twitter and Sandisk sent me a message!!! lol

Then I RMA it and got a new card in the post :)

I have only ever used Sandisk and have never had any problems. For that reason I am unlikely to change. i am sure there are other brands with many satisfied customers as well.

I'm going to have to put my vote with Sandisk.

My g/f got me a Transcend 16GB x133 for my birthday.

I noticed that I'd get an increasing amount of "unexpected end of file" errors when loading the images into Lightroom.

I did a little research on tinterweb and information is sketchy but it does seem that the Transcend cards are more prone to this.

Then I carried out some testing as I thought it might be something to do with viewing/deleting shots and/or turning the camera on/off. The result was it seemed as if turning the camera on/off caused more of these failures.

If I shoot RAW & JPEG I get all the JPEGs but some of the RAW files still get this message.

I've tried formatting and error checking the card and no issues are apparent.

If I use any of my Sandisk cards I don't get this error................

I've been using 4 16gb Transcend 133x on my 5DmkII for the last 2 months without any problems. Probably taken around 8000 shots and heaps of video with no problems at all.

I think I got lucky :D

I use sandisk with no problem,but in the pass i had a lot of problems with lexar,when the prices were very high,the problem was with downloading to an epson p1000,epson were very helpful,even those the problem was with the lexar cards,lexar :bang:,had to write of 2 cards,never used lexar again.

I would stay away from the Duracell... I was ordering some AA rechargeable batteries from 7 day and figured I would try the Duracell. Hahaa!!! What a mistake... My D3 does not like this memory card. Randomly hangs (after taking a photo, while scolling through photos on the card, etc), while doing things on the CF card, green light comes on and then thats it... Have to remove the battery to get camera working. Dont have the same issue with my Kingston cards....

Only one place for the Duracell cards, the BIN!!!!

or use them in a different camera !

Some cameras & some memory cards just don't work together, they are all meant to be designed to a common standard but maybe they're translated badly ......

Another vote for Sandisk, but avoid daftly cheap ones.

Have just purchased a Duracell card from 7day shop - worked perfectly on its first use. Still have all my Sandisks - but the Duracell was very good value for money... Using it on non business critical projects for now - but first impressions are good.

I got some Duracells from 7dayshop and they wouldn't work in my 50D. No problem getting a refund however.

Used both Sandisk and Transcend. As with others, no noticable difference in speeds (although I rarely fill the buffer), but Transcend is cheaper so I tend to go with them. Had no problems with either.

I've just bought a Transcend 8GB 70mb/s, lets see if it's an improvement on the 30mb/s sandisk at 10fps.

If your camera does a maximum 10fps then that should stay the same, how many continuous frames until the camera slows down from that 10fps may change with the faster card. Hopefully a change for the better. ;) :lol:

...but the Duracell was very good value for money...

Not necessarily. It is cheep, which is not the same thing. If it lasts and performs well, then it may be good value.

I will no doubt update this thread if it turns out to be problematic.. It was purchased as a 'test and trial' card...

Sandisks are still my primary cards.. But good to try something new to see how it performs :)

Whatever brand you go for, buy from a reputable place as the amount of counterfeit stuff out there is unbelievable!
FWIW, I bought a budget "Bytestore" class 6, year old now and never a problem. Handles HD video and bursts just fine.

Sandisk and Transcend 600x user and never had a problem, nor have I has issues with an old Fuji card or Lexar.

If your camera can utilise the UDMA x600 type card I have no hesitation recommending Transcend
