CF card recovery

Used my old Fuji S3 Pro as a back up camera
the other day and put a brand new CF card
in it on the day. I was shooting in raw and
it was definitely writing to card. Anybody that's
used the S3 Pro will probably remember that wonderful slow down and stop while it writes
to card if you dare to shoot more than 4 shots
on the bounce.

Tried the card in my card reader it doesn't even show up on my laptop.Tried it with the camera attached direct to the laptop still nothing.

Went and bought a new cable as I was using
the same cable to connect camera/ card
reader and tried another card reader. I
eventually got the card to show up after
several attempts but the card showed
as empty and failed again before I could
attempt to go any further and couldn't get
it to connect again.

I've got enough photos from the other
camera that it's not the end of the world
if I lose the stuff from this card. On the
other hand I'd still like to recover the
photos if it's possible without spending
a fortune.

Has anybody any suggestions on how to
recover the data from the card? I've found
tons of programs online but I've no idea
which ones to try.
 
Do not know which brand you have but Sandisk, Transcend etc normally provide a link to recovery software with their cards and a registration code. As above Recuva also works well.
 
recuva is pretty good, but just be aware .. last time I recommended it to someone, there was some annoying software bundled with the installer. If it's still there, be sure to uncheck the boxes which install the additional software.
