I have a Canon 7D and my Transcend 8gb 600x seems to have died tonight (and consequently lost my photos of today) :bang:. I fear this may have something to do with my cheap card reader.

Any suggestions for both a cf card and card reader?

Have you tried any image recovery software?

The ONLY cards I trust are Sandisk Extreme Pros. I use two in my D3S and one in each of my two D700s they are fast and reliable.

I'm sure Transend are a good make but only trust Sandisk.

1st before you do anything try another card reader, your photos may still be on the card.
When you put the card reader in the computer what happening to make you believe your cards not working ?

:)

yes, it wouldn't allow, and then also when put back in the camera it would not read it. I have been able to reformat the card and take more pictures, but the card reader still won't accept it, so still suspecting the card reader had something to do with it.

Gutted as I was taking photos for a friend tonight of their boat in a sunset - but I suppose I am quite lucky as at least I can go back again when the conditions are ok...

Without sounding snobby I only use Sandisk - If I am using a £1k camera and £1k lens, why use a cheap card?

No, I'm not expecting to recover anything now, as I knew the formatting would lose them. The camera also indicated it could not read it, and I attempted recovery on the computer, to no avail.

But I do not feel overly confident on continuing with this card. Any recommendations for a new cf card? and card reader? In the meantime I have left in my hubby's hands to install the software and use the camera lead...

I am now looking at Sandisk. Is Lexar of the same quality, or do you recommend Sandisk all the way...? Extreme or Extreme pro?

Sandisk have somehow established a mythical status that I'm not sure is deserved. Having used a mixture of different brands down the years I've noticed no difference other than purchase price! I'm really happy with my current lexar cards.

:plusone:

I use Trancsend, Lexar, Delkin ,Fuji and Sandisk cards never had a single problem with any of them ( Fuji is 7 or 8 years old now). I normally go for the Trancsend or Delkin first when going on a shoot.

The difference is the price.

I use Sandisk or Lexar cards and recommend them to friends and family ...

I have a coupe of 7dayshop ones, seem good for the price, not sure who actually makes them but no problems so far :) and at ~£12 for 16gb I can't complain

:agree:
I've had a couple of Lexar go through the washing machine and they still work

I have found in the dark depths another card reader (but will still replace with a new and better one), and am at least pleased my Transcend card is working ok. But this has been a bit of a wake up call to use maybe 2 cards if I was on an important shoot, or on holiday where I would not want to lose any photos/memories.

Thank you for your recommendations.

I think I will also purchase the Lexar card reader as it seems to have pretty good reviews.

+1 for the Lexar reader... and get the USB3 version!

If using a PC and needing USB3 ports, I can recommend the Transcend USB3 PCI-card.

I have a Mac with a USB2 but understand the USB3 reader will work (at a 2 rate), and hope to upgrade to a new laptop in the distant future...

Not necessarily so. There are different types of format and most of them do not destroy the data. In fact some times formatting the card actually helps the recovery software.

I agree with most here that Sandisk are the ones to have but avoid silly cheap ones as they may be counterfeit. You will get a photo recovery program with most of them. Give it a go - nothing to lose.
