Looking for a CCTV system sub £200, DVR and just the one camera to point at my car as a couple of day ago had the Catalytic Converter stolen where half the exhaust was cut away in the process.

Thing is the area where my car is park is not very well lit and wondering how some of the cameras perform in low light so any feedback would be good.

Been looking at this camera only (no DVR) over at the bay for £52

700TVL 1/3' Sony CCD Low Illumination DWDR OSD DNR 40M IR night vision range 2.8-12mm Manual Zoom Lens IP65 Waterproof Housing Simple and easy installation

Reading the more the TVL is the sharper the image as well as going for a CCD rather than CMOS

No camera will not prevent further theft hence don't want to spend hundreds but more of a detterent

Maplins

I've had a look, any recommendations? do you have a system from Maplins and how does it perform in bad light

I dont sorry Tony, but with all due respect it is like everthing that get`s asked nowadays. You will end up with a thousand reccomendations from people and end up being more confused than ever. If I need something I do a quick search for someone that has various types to choose from, go in and look and ask for advice, make up my mind what I want and buy it, if it did not perform to my expectations or as good as I was told it would then I would take it back  The majority of all stuff is made in China, most of the components are from a dozen different suppliers so one sticky name label or laser etched logo is about as good as the next one imho.

Pick up a second hand Y cam on ebay, they're the best IP cam out there at present, work well in low light and you can view/record on your computer or mobile phone.

Unless its a well sheltered position I would recommend the optional housing you can get for them.

I've had 3 up outside mine for several years now and would recommend them above anything else I've seen.
They've survived heavy rain, strong winds, sub zero temps, temps in excess of 32deg c, snow and gale force winds.

See where you are coming from, just hoping someone on the forum could just give me a rough idea of how good/bad these actually are and if there worth the hassle, guess if anything will act as a deterrent.

magicaxeman, never come across of the Y Cams before will take a look

Have you thought of using an ip camera via a pc? A Foscam or 'alike' with infrared capability can be had from about £50, add some inexpensive software like H264 Webcam that can be motion activated to record and alert you.

Picked up and basic system nothing to flash and in fairness the camera is not to bad in the night.

I didn't think of this to begin with but anyone know the law where the camera can point, the camera is mounted on my property but half the viewing is on my land the other half on the public road. I did ask the Policeman who took details of the theft but he was unclear to the rules.

i believe you cannot record the public property? i could be thinking of adjoining neighbours property though.

some of the higher end systems let you mask out areas for this reason.

Thanks Neil, I've emailed the council to see what their take is on it

You can record your property and the public road. Others property is another matter but if there's no choice about what the camera sees I wouldn't worry about it, the resolution is probably too poor to make out any kind of detail at a distance.

Yes that is correct

Just heard a little while ago from a neighbour a garage (not to far away) that stores caravans had 2 nicked the other day and they have a lot of CCTV, just makes me wonder why I'm bothering.

You do what you can, a visible camera will deter most opportunist thieves.

I know you've picked up a camera now but just seen this one coming up from Lidl in a week's time for £20. Seems to have night vision capability too.

Ending up with 600TVL Vari-focal IR Dome Camera, last weekend my car had a little bump during the night

Did you identify who did it from that footage

In the end yes, lucky for them someone in the street knew who the other vehicle belong to as I would have had to approach the police.

The person who was driving this vehicle had plenty off time to approach me but they didn't, when I approach them they denied any knowledge until I quoted them the time, the fact they got our of their vehicle and checked their damage, come over looked at my damage before finally checking the damage again on their vehicle. Turns out they had been drinking and also uninsured to be driving that particular vehicle.

Sounds like a police job to me. Total ladygarden to a. drive drunk, b. drive uninsured and c. leave the scene and deny responsibility.
