I just draw them the old fashioned way using black felt tips on paper, but in just line-art black and white.
I then scanned the finished cartoon and then load up the cartoon using Paint Shop Pro 5. I upped the contrast to make the white paper area whiter and the black lines more well defined. Then used the "flood fill" to provide the colour. But I have to make sure all the lines in that cartoon are joined together to prevent colours flooding into another area by accident.
I save the scanned image as a bitmap to start off with. In a JPEG image, the artifacts shows up when I try to flood fill any area in that image.
The reason I use such an ancient version of Paint Shop Pro is that it's so easy and yet efficient for this kind of thing. Anything more would just be overkill.
I was really interested in that process - not that i am gonig to try - i am crap at drawing! I thought maybe you were using a tablet or something and drawing them digitally!
