I was just watching the advert for the new freelander 3

the voice over said "from £19,495" the text at the bottom said "model shown £35,500

how can there be £16,000 between the base model and the top of the range

I can't imagine the base model doesn't have A/C so other than leather and satnav how do they come up with £16,000 for the difference :shrug:
 
top of the range prob has something like a 4L V8, leather everything and every concievable "extra"

base one is made of cheese? :shrug:
 
But the actual cost between the models can't be more than a few thousand pounds 16k is really taking the P
 
There is about £10,000 between a Mondeo 1.6 Edge and a Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Titanium X Sport, then there are extras to add to that so I don't see why it isn't possible. Still it's better than those supercars that manufacturers bring out, then update them, strip things out to make them lighter, then charge you even more for the privelege.
 
I have a Peugot 206 van. This was about 2K more than the car version even though there's no rear seats/belts or rear windows. Just some tin plate where the window's go instead.
I know, I should have bought the car and sold the seats and windows for spares. That way I'd probably be 2.5k in pocket.
 
Very easy to see that difference - bigger, better engines, comfort-pack, more advanced suspension software package, entertainment toys, GPS, alloys, paint...

speaking of which, Bentley have a matte black option on the Continental Supersports, yours for an extra £16,000.....

So you don't think the price of a new mondeo to trade up is a rip off

it's not as if the base model is a different car, or it doesn't have suspension and wheels already, the difference in cost of making a 15" alloy and a 18" alloy must be peanuts compared to the £1200+ they want, yes the tyres are more expensive but again how can it cost that much more to make a bigger tyre than a small one, the process is the same.

Like paying £5.40 for a gallon of petrol I think we've just become accustomed to being charged a fortune for things so accept it.

They must be laughing their asses off
 
My local Vauxhall dealer had (probably still has) a habit of pricing used cars at say £6995 and then putting a sticker on the windscreen saying "metallic paint +£295"


I've been tempted to go in and say "I'll take that 3-year old Astra, but I don't think I'll bother with the metallic paint".....
 
years ago my mate bought a nearly new three series BMW from a local main dealer at the time he paid a few hundred extra for some wheels ( M3 ones I think) 2-3 years later he went to same dealer to trade car in against another one , the dealer said he couldn't give him full value for his car has it didn't have the original wheels on !!!!

No...you should sell all your cameras and condemn your family to medical experimentation just for the privelige of looking through the windows at a Ford showroom...let alone being allowed to touch one.

I've experienced at first hand what 'cheap' cars built to a budget actually means in real life. I own a 2008 Ford Mustang - rrp $32,000 which was about £17,000 when I bought it due to the exchange rate - the base model is deliberately cheap and nasty as most buyers will customise them according to their needs - drag-racing, road-racing, cruising etc. The top-end Mustang is only about $3,000 extra, as the 'extras' are only things like sat-nav and speakers... even buyers of the top model still want to choose upgrades based on their own driving styles (and also want the ability to do the work themselves, as I did).
At the same time, a Shelby GT with enhanced suspension and a few shiny bits on the dash was a whopping $10,500 over the cost of a basic GT.
I enhanced the suspension myself, with Hotchkis racing components, Eibach springs and Koni shocks - all of which are better quality than the Ford Racing components used in the Shelby and it only cost me $2,500 shipped to Germany from the USA. Took me eight hours to do all the work myself.
You couldn't DIY the suspension on a BMW 3-series even if you wanted to...

European buyers don't want to be bothered with all that fuss, so the difference in cost between base models and the loaded top models is quite a lot as the work is done for you.

Luckily for you, Ford cars come pre-wired for all the extras regardless of the model, so DIY-ing those extras is very easy. Likewise the cost of better tyres and alloys is negligable compared to specc-ing them from a dealer, so buy the base model and customise it yourself.

If you look at most manfacturers you do get quite a bit extra, using Qashqai as an example...

Visia to Acenta (£1500)
Extras: Dual Zone Climate, Rear Sensors, Auto Lights, Auto Wipers, 6 CD Changer, Cruise & Speed Limiter, retractable/colour co-ordinated side mirrors.

Acenta to N-Tec (£500)
Extra's: Sat Nav, USB Ipod connectivity, Reverse camera, Panormaic Glass Roof

N-Tec to Tekna (£1600)
Extra's: 18" Alloys, Heated Leather Seats, 18" Alloys


I won't go into the engines as well lol but personally think the the walk up prices are more than fair for the amount of extra kit you get on the car, then tie that in with the extra's in the engine/4x4 functionality and can easily see why theres a huge difference in price between the models :D
