Week 21 - Bizarre (pun applied = Bazaar) Just found out about this challenge - sounds interesting. Hope you don't mind me joining in the fun as late as this? This is my interpretation - got this in the church bazaar - hope the play on words is OK?

Hi Carl, Well Welcome to the forum and the fray! You will find this is a great forum, lots of helpful people here, so welcome aboard.
A bizarre place to start if I may say so;) I actually thought that these are quite expensive to buy now (probably not) "A Proper Mincer" none of your electric cobblers there! As a child had many a happy hour turning the handle on these:). Play on words fine bend it, shake it, any way you want it! Lots of people use the proverbial "Shoehorn" here to get there shots to squeeze into the remit of the theme!

Nice sharp shot, looks like its getting a little dark toward the left, unless that was intentional ;) But quite like the lighting. Love the nice texture in the casting, I guess they are still making these as this looks like a newish item.

Quite a few people drop out of TP52 and surprisingly some people join up later.:arghh: You will see some here that have joined up later have chosen to play catch up right from the start, you always get some sadomasochist's :banghead:

Welcome to the loony bin!

Thank you Steve. Got it quite cheap and in it's original box too - hardly if at all used. These things do not break down like their modern equivalents - I have an affiliation with simple things ... can't think why :wacky: ?!? I was trying desperately to get the hopper with the screw thread at the bottom as well as the mincer bit but at 90 degrees to each other made that an impossibility so settled for this. Didn't want the table clamp neither so darkened the left. Aw! what the heck, it was fun and kept me occupied. May try going back to catch up on some of the missed challenges - we'll see. Think I made a hash of the upload on the main TP52 screen - just shows my link, nothing more but hey ho. Thanks again Steve.

No Problem! You'll fit in just fine if you like simple things:ROFLMAO:
Bit of an awkward thing to photograph, but its different, guess not everyone will know what it is;). Sounds like a bargain that couldn't be missed eh!
Don't forget photography is subjective and everyone has a different take on your shot... and I know some people get the hump or become disillusioned because they get little feedback, or Negative feedback but to me that's what its all about .... What's the point of putting your image up on the likes of Facebook where most people, struggle to say much more than Great, Fab, Nice etc etc... If you want meaningful feedback.... Put it on TP and add the title Critique! But done hold me responsible for what you get back:) If you get no feedback its either a blinding image or its...its eerrr not so good:eek:

Yeah your right, you can go and edit the main page... Not sure where your image is coming from but check out here to find the correct way to insert your Image https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/site-help-and-support.13/

Cheers
Steve

Hi Carl, and welcome to the madness of the 52 week challenge :)

two nice shots you've posted, I'm not sure whether the first one was meant for bizarre or machine? - it is a nice bit of machinery - I've got one tucked away in a cupboard somewhere.

The second one I'm guessing is alphabet? It's a good take on the theme and I like the dof.

Hi Lorraine. Thank you very much. First was meant to be Bizarre but so challenging that I decided that maybe I could get away with a play on words and so offered it up as a "Bazaar" purchase - pushing my luck really. The second is alphabet but I have a better idea and may re-do as a Re-shoot. I am struggling with the instructions on posting but will get there. You are absolutely right - needs a title to identify the TP52 theme. How do you create a my Flickr link as you have?

Hi Carl - you are certainly catching up! Love the sharpness of your images. The machine is super. Like mono for the broken chairs - suits the style of chair too and makes the shadows pop out.

Hi Carl and welcome, never too late to join in nice to see new faces.

Bizarre; nice take on the theme, spot on focus and a sharp image. the B&W works well too. Is that a mincing machine?

Alphabet? again another sharp and spot on focus shot.

Machine; I like the close focusing of the shot and nice colour too.

Broken; quick off the mark there. Like the B&W and sharpness of the image. The slight off centre works too.

Well done for the catching up and looking forward to more of your submission.

Thank you Stan - nice to be here. Forgot to put the title but Yes, alphabet and Yes too for the mincer from a bygone era. Thanks again.

Welcome to the 52s Carl. (y)

I think you'll find you can edit your posts at any time .... should you want to name your keyboard/typewriter pic.

Bizarre Bazaar mincer ... nice close-up, subtle lighting ... I like it.

Alphabet ... nice POV, clean shot, with strong centre focal point.

Machine ... I like very much ... powerful heavy metal mechanism, strong colour with great oily gleam.

Broken ... sharp sun-drenched shot nicely positioned in the frame. Those Van Gogh chairs make a great image even when passed their use-by date ... looks like they've had extra reinforcement added at some stage, and a coat of paint too?

Good stuff Carl ... looking forward to seeing more. (y)

oh wow loving machine, all that yummy oil and mechanisms you got the crop just right too

broken is another great image although there is a lot of grey in there :)

Thanks David/Summer for your thoughtful comments - really appreciate them. Shadows are a bit harsh in Broken so may try a re-shoot at some stage.

Week 9 - Vertical

Chaldon Church is of Saxon Foundation and is recorded in the Charter of Frithwald, dated 727 AD. A beautiful and nicely preserved building located in a quiet rural setting. The tower inSPIREd (sorry) me to contribute this image for the Vertical theme.

Good idea for theme and nice shot - like the sky - interesting.. The spire looks like a witches hat! Looks like a nice little church. Did you go in?

what a beautiful church :) the only thing I would change would be perhaps a little more sky above the spire

Thank you both. Yes, I did go in Michalene - fabulous pagan-like mural; a bit eerie but must take my tripod in next time to counter the ... well, let's just call it camera shake shall we. I see what you mean Summer about the sky - easy to clone in extra to give the spire some space. Thanks again.

Week 9 - Vertical re-post after cloning in extra sky ... per Summer suggestion.

Hi Carl,

you're getting through the catch up at a fair pace (y)

machine - good close up, and nice decision to home in on the detail (I have no idea what it is mind ;))

broken - another good choice and very sharp as well. I'm not too sure about the mono though - I think it might have worked better in colour, but that's probably just a personal preference.

vertical - that looks like a lovely old church, it sounds as though it's as good on the inside as it is outside. I do think the added sky is a good idea (y)

about the Flickr link, I can't remember how I did it, I think I must have found a tutorial somewhere. But I'm guessing it's not much different to adding the linky on the main thread - it'll be just a case of copying in the right code - good luck! :)

Really good Carl - like how the colourful t-shirt pops out and also the texture on the boards.

Hi Carl,

I really like your crowd shot, I think it was a good idea just to have the feet & legs showing, it really suggests people who are lost in the crowd

Thank you all for those nice comments. Didn't look as good in full colour.

crowd ... so John Cleese but I like it.

Ha ha - thank you ... .from all at the Ministry.

Week 6 - Watery

A can of beer in a water-filled concrete block on a construction site.

Welcome Carl.
To make it easier to follow, I'll comment in the order in which you posted them!

Bizarre....Mincer!! I still have one of these. It was my Grandma's, and I still use it regularly! Kids today would certainly call it bizarre :-)

Alphabet...Spot on theme and just my kind of shot. Well done!

Machine....No idea what it is (suspension spring?), but I really like the image. The colours are vibrant, the focus is excellent and I like the angle. :-)

Broken....It's the kind of shot I had in my own mind, but I'll like to see a little more black in the blacks...if that makes sense.

Vertical....The edited version for me, definitely. Not only is there more room, but it just feels brighter.

Crowd...Sorry, but the tilt kills this one for me.

Household.....Racking my brain for a while but I think I finally.....Cheese grater? In any case, I like the shot...cracking DOF.

Bold....Very nice indeed. The metal has almost a liquid look to it.

Water....Very well spotted indeed. Right on for the theme too.

So, welcome to the forums, and to the challenge! Don't worry about @69Bonni he seems very odd I know, but as long as we feed him right and keep him on his meds, he's docile enough :-)
I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Ah that's great - thanks Ruth for taking the trouble and your nice comments, including Crowd and especially Steve . Trying desperately to catch up - lovely forum and ever so helpful tips and advice.

Household; Trying to figure out what's the Household item, my guess is Pepper Mill? Regardless it's a nice shot and like the angle looking straight down.

Bold; that's a very different thought and take on the theme. Sharp, spot on focus and good lighting too.

Watery; well done for spotting it and very usual.

Hi Stan. Thank you. Household is a grater taken straight down - birds eye view ... unhygienic to have a bird in the kitchen of course but you know what I mean. :)

Hi, Carl, quick pick of my favourites:

Broken, B&W works well here. Nice detail and textures, I'd like it a little wider.

Crowd, I don't mind SC or even the tilt, works well and adds some dynamism.

Watery, well spotted and I like the ripples.

Subscribbed

Cheers.

I'll start with bold as this one really caught my eye - love the lighting and clarity of the picture

Hi Carl back I'm back again.....

Alphabet... Yep this works I think I might have gone for a tighter DOF on this but its good as it is nice even lighting...

Machine... Keeping us in suspension on this one eh! Really strong shot, nice detail, and interest. Like the fluid gives a nice glossy effect, bold strong colours and the angle works well. Like the background and the vignette.

Broken... Two chairs out of my workshop! nicely spotted;). B&W works here, But I think it would be better with a bit more contrast i.e. put them against a darker background to pull them up a bit, the shadow is nice and the off centre POV.

Vertical... Trying to find the vertical in your shot:D Must be one of the Iron railings round that tomb :ROFLMAO: Summer was right first shot was a bit tight... Nice even exposure and the light is fairly good. Good colour and the rusty reds balance well against the greens with nice dark clouds. Works well straight up;). surprising how many of these quaint little church's are around.

Crowd... Quite like this, love the strong shadows and the colour popping, Something and I cant quite put my finger on it doesn't hang with me? I think it might be, they look a bit too regimented, which gives a slightly staged look, of course this might not have been the case, its just the way it turned out. A certain charm about the shot but I think you need to boost the silliness more... I normally set the slider to 100%.

Household... Very abstract! Sharp DOF and sharp focus.... Think the only think worth considering would be a square crop;)

Bold.... Fits the theme, not a hair in sight!.... Love the BG in this its not black and has a bronzy brown tinge, bit like using a dodgy filter:D Anyhow it enhances the shot, nice detail and interest and very well lit no nasty specular highlights you sometimes get with shiny objects, well shot.(y)

Watery.... uummm well spotted.... Unusual only thing for me with my OCD would be that bit of black "Stuff" running diagonally up from the bottom of the can across the rust tie down, and the yellowy white, flower hear/ fag butt the other side of the tie down by the yellow banner on the can... I find both of these distracting. Other than that love the idea and concept diagonal angle works for me too.

If you want to create a Flickr link just write "Flickr" or whatever you like, then highlight the text then click on the hyperlink icon at the top of your post, so that's the 7th icon along at the top of your post look like a chain link! Then copy your flickr address in the address bar in your browser and paste it into the hyperlink box that appears on here when you click the link icon. There are tutorials in the bowls TP some where:).

BTW you don't wanna be listening to any mad frogs @viv1969 for example, you have heard of that term "Mad as a box of frogs" haven't you:ROFLMAO::LOL:. Hope you enjoy the forum.... I was on here 6 months before I realised it was a Photography forum I thought it was a spin off from Gumtree with people flogging all sorts of odd things, couldn't work out how to buy things here:D.... PS i'll give you two bob for the stool and chair(y)

What can I say - thank you Andy, Donna & Steve. Love the critique. Never considered a wider pov for Broken - should have applied the rule of thirds - or to darken the bg for better contrast (I wasn't too happy with it but didn't quite realise that it was a little "flat"). With Watery, I can see exactly what you mean Steve - I'll have to perform some PS magic to clone out but it would have been far better of course if I'd removed the distractions at the time. Thanks to your observations, I can see how all these images can be improved - great to have such thoughtful and considered opinions. By the way, Machine is a partial of an old-fashioned car mechanics oil can .... (it's the oil can and not the mechanic that's old-fashioned).:ty:

Your Welcome!

Ah yes an oil can! I must have at least 6 of those in the workshop!!!
In my case the inverse is true it's the mechanic that's old-fashioned and not oil can:D
