OK, I've talked this through with my wife, we know the implications. We're prepared for the worst, selling the car, the house, the cat and some of the kids. I'm even thinking of taking a second job. We've told the neighbours and our friends and family to expect to be dragged into our house and forced to watch slide shows of flowers, fences and random members of the public mouthing the words "F### OFF !", that sort of thing.

Yes, I'm going to start collecting Zeiss ZE lenses.

Now, could anyone with any of these masterpieces post some samples of what makes these lenses so special ? What separates them from lesser glass, like "pop" and micro-contrast and subject separation and colour and rendering.

I'm just wondering which one to get first. I was going to ease into it with the 1.4/50 (I know it gets pretty mixed reviews but I'm getting it anyway) but I thought I'd see if any of the others tickle my fancy first.

Also, I'm only considering native mount ZE lenses.

Thanks in advance, chaps and chapettes.

Nikon mount but same optics, on a D700 full frame

I also have the 25/2.8 which is just as good, unfortunately still not got around to processing my holiday shots with some examples :D

There is a good source of info HERE, which includes the image thread HERE, now at over 370 pages, so plenty of examples.

One of the regulars on that thread also sent me this LINK to some of his shots with the 21mm

Thanks Martyn,

That would be Denior, then. I know him from POTN. His images are stunning. In fact he's partly responsible for my Zeiss itch.

So up to now, it's the 2.8/21 Distagon I'll be getting first.

Gary.

I went for the 25/2.8 rather than the 21 as I did not need the width, and preferred the compactness of the 25.

The ones to look at would be 21/2.8, 35/2, 50/2 and 100/2, I am also in a minority of liking the images from the 28/2.

Of course there is always this purchase option LINK :D

Thanks a lot everyone. I definitely think a 2.8/21 is on the cards by the end of the year. I don't mind the size of it, in fact I quite like the way it looks. I don't think the 2.8/25 is available in ZE form, I could be wrong, though.

I think I'd like to end up with: 21, 1.4/35, 1.4/50, 85, 100 eventually. I know the 2/50 is supposed to be sharper than the 1.4/50 but I don't think I'll need x2 macro lenses and 100 is the best by all accounts.

I wish they would remake the 35-70 zoom in ZE mount !

Gary.

You are correct, it is not made in ZE, but that adds to the rumour that it is being reworked, possibly as an f2, I should add this has been talked about for over a year.

The 50/2 is more than just a macro lens, if I needed another 50mm it would be the version I went for. However it is over twice the cost of the 50/1.4.

I wish they would remake the 35-70 in a ZF mount :)

I would definitely take the f2 macro over the 1.4, but then I just love to get in close ;)

The 25 focuses closer than the 21/28 if i'm not mistaken?

If only the 100 f2 was a 1:1 it would be perfection :( still find it difficult to justify the cost though...

The 25mm foucs to 6cm infront of the element! I absolutly love the photos it produces when you do it, and with that function it really does make it a truly unique lens!

I have old MF pentax 28mm 2.8 which focuses to just under 20cm from the sensor, and I used to have a sigma 28mm 1.8 which focussed to about the same distance as the zeiss- I miss it, very tempted by the zeiss actually
