Hi,

After a bit of advice.
I have a dell Inspiron I'm always using my laptop built-in card reader.
I've used SpeedOut V0.5 to test my speed.
I am getting 31MB/s reading 27MB/s writing

The two sd card I use are some Sandisk Extreme 64GB 90MB/s

Is the test showing that my built-in reader is slow?
Would I benefit with a external reader to make downloading faster?

The speed of the card is the write speed, the speed on the laptops is the laptops card reader read speed, so it’s irrelevant the speed of the card in this situation.

If you have usb3 ports, you may see some increase with an external reader, but not a huge amount.
 
I bought a V90 Kingston card (UHS2) which came with a card reader, it is definitely faster than the onboard reader when plugged in USB3 - even with UHS1 cards

Exactly this is my question is my built in reader my bottle neck. Can I get much faster download with a USB card reader?
If I buy a card with 300mb/s write and 300mb/s read can I achieved anywhere close to this when I download my photo.
I believe my built in reader will still max out at 31mb/s reading what will a USB 3 will give me?

Err, no. The speed on the card is the read speed; the write speed is probably only 60MB/s. The write speed tends to be hidden because it's normally much lower than the read speed.

My Lexar reader gives a read speed of around 85MB/s with the right card in it.
 
I bought the sony reader and it just arrived. I'm totally over the moon. I also bought a sony tough 32gb UHS-II theoretically rated at write 299mb/s read 300mb/s and I'm getting very near this with the card. So that about 10x faster than when using my built-in reader.
I've just downloaded a few photos in lightroom and it was days and night. Just visualising what was in the card was super quick and the download felt instant.
I'd recommend spending that bit of money.
