Hello TP'ers. I've found myself with a little more time on my hands now I'm semi retired and have surprised myself by really enjoying taking pictures of wild birds, in fact I've taken to it like a Duck to water!!!

I use a Nikon D750 with grip and a Nikkor 200-500 lens. The whole ensemble is heavy and after an hour or so of carrying it around it becomes very uncomfortable and tiring and camera shake is inevitable.

I bought a cheap aluminium Velbon UP-400 Monopod but it's not very robust and feels quite “whippy” heed buy cheap buy twice!

There's a plethora of Monopods available with wide ranging prices and the choice is very confusing. I'm 6'2” and would be very grateful for recommendations preferably for a CF monopod with a more sturdy construction and likely to be more rigid to suite my new hobby. I don't need one with a head. My budget will be £100.00 maximum. Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.
Regards
NN.

I bought a Sirui carbon monopod for use with my 7D/ sigma 150-600 sports. It handles the load well & feels solid as a rock :)

That rather limits your choices to what you can find 2nd hand. Check MPB, Mifsuds, Ffordes etc. and see what they've got in stock. Might even be worth giving them a call and asking if they have any CF TRIpods with a broken leg or 2 then unbolt the broken legs. Not ideal but a possible cheaper option.

Good luck.

I have d500 and 200-500 and often use an Induro AM25 8M. - I know its not Carbon-Fibre but its solid and light. For bird photography, its more as a support to relieve the arms, rather than needed as a rock solid non vibrating platform, and the weight difference is not huge compared to a Carbon.

Why CF? It won't save any significant weight in a monopod. IMO, the most important thing w/ a monopod is that is is convenient enough to have with you... for me that means compact. I mostly use a Sirui P-306 aluminum monopod... although I also own/have owned a couple others, to include a Gitzo CF model (I sold that one).

Evening everyone.Thank you for responding. I've now got some information to work with rather than literally dozens and dozens of Brands and models.
I've always been under the impression from various sources that Carbon Fibre was the way forward although reading your comments this isn't perhaps the real deal

I have a Feisol tripod and it is very well made.
Their 1471 CF monopod is listed at 128 euros which is just about in your budget.
They alo offer a slightly cheaper one not quite as robust.

Wilkinson were doing a great deal at Christmas which may still be on a Manfrotto MPMXPROA3 WITH THE 234rc head for £50.
A fantastic bargain.

Thank you all. The Sirui range seem to crop up quite a lot and have a good following. Up to my ears in work at the moment but will hopefully follow up my quest within the next week
Many thanks

Another thumbs up here for Sirui I have one with tilting head to match and works a treat so solid

i just bought a Feisol tripod in the classifieds & it's pretty good, i would certainly try a matching monopod based on what i've seen :)
