Car Rig Photography

Really informative video. That's some serious favours called-in.... and that rig looks mentally expensive!!

After reading through the video comments, I looked at Virtual Rig (which was mentioned) and have to say, the software option is quite something if you don't have the on-shoot time or facilities for rigs.

But doing it for real looks cool :)

Virtual rig is great. I did this with it:

Great video, thank you for sharing it. That virtual rig picture looks great too!

looks like a movie camera rig - like the clear boom.

too much effort though for a couple of shots

Interesting George. Which version did you buy. Do you take the static shot and add the background if so how do you get the wheel movement?

Cheers

Popped out yesterday whilst I had a brief moment of sunshine to play with mine again.

you need to get the camera further away from the car. the perspective makes the cerb look twice as long as it is lol

Cheers

Looks good Dave! ^

What pole do you use?

Just a short but sturdy one which extends to about 1.8m. I tried using an aerial pole for the longer length the same as George but the hit rate of in focus shots were poor due to bounce. Bear in mind I'm usually shooting these on my own, so I haven't someone walking to steady the camera.

There was a guy working on a carbon pole that I chatted to at last years Focus, but that seems to have died the death. I guess I'll have to work on the pole plus support wire idea again.

Quite a few problems with your shot Byker, the tones are all a bit hot, the reflections look stationary and the angle isn't really working. I think a lower angle would make a huge difference to that shot

Quite a lot of PS work to take out the rig which was a pain due to the lighting angle but I only had about 45 mins of light yesterday before the clouds and rain moved in. It's shot a little 'bright' to fit into the set it belongs to, but I'll look at toning it down maybe.

The reflections on the car weren't shopped as the rig was mounted about as far over on the boot/side as I could possibly risk and where I wasn't too worried about the reflections looking at the shot. Just a CPL on it, and around 0.4s exposure I think?

It was shot at that angle as I needed a shot of the driving. To be honest George, it's a rip off of exactly the same shot you did with the T350, only with a shorter pole. Same angle, same idea with the grass.

As I said I ran out of time as I wanted one lower down, from the front high and low. I'll give it another go next time.

Cheers

Couldn't find the photo of yours I was on about George. I'm a big admirer of yours - was it perhaps Deans Sagaris? I think it was the one that ran in Sprint?

Edit: Found it - The LS7 Sag that was in Aug 2010 Sprint.

Anyhow - had a quick browse through your flickr, I see what you mean about the lower angle - quite a few you've taken at the same height i.e.

I'll have to try that - cheers

That rig in the first post is mental.

Byker with your areial pole did you have a support wire fitted? A rig i used a while ago had one and made a big difference.

Hopefully i'll be building mine at the start of febuary. Did look into carbon tubes but at £85 a meter without connectors it's too pricey for me atm. Instead i'll be trying an aerial pole but reinforced with carbon :)

I think it was Andrew (andwhynot) that was looking into carbon rigs.

Cheers Micky, Andy was who I was chatting to. I think with the connector issues it's all gone quiet.

That's effectively how I was going to try with an aerial pole. Even with the big, heavy short pole I have there's still some bounce from the end unless it's supported. I really should try my 400D body back on there for lightness.

Which pole is that? I'm not sure what George is using now but he did have some good results with a cheap aerial pole from Screwfix.

It's a 2 inch aerial pole. 2x 6ft lengths with a billet connector in the middle. We still had to support the camera but i think alot of that was down to the very flexable bonnent.

From what i have read all booms will bounce. It just a case of reducing it or finding a super smooth road.

I'm currently building a rig at the moment, can't wait to get it finished and take some shots :) I'll post up in the future of what parts I'm using, photos of the rig, and the finished edited photos :D

I used my rig kit to mount two cameras to the back of the MX-5 today to act as a chase car whilst I wirelessly triggered.

This is the best I got:
