Was driving home tonight through Alderley Edge (posh part of Cheshire) and within half a mile, I passed the following cars -

Ferrari F430
151327852

Maserati Gran Turismo
52271194

Austin Martin DB9
3404514967

Thought nothing of the first 3 as they are the norm round there alongside the footballers wives driving their Range Rover Sports. Then I saw the following 2 which nearly made me crash. The Audi was the first I've seen in the flesh...

R8
347597880

Then this little baby worth £750,000
209137530

Made me feel very sad driving my Mondeo but happy that I'd seen a Veyron out on the road. Will probably never see one again.

It's only compensation for a small w***y and a large ego.

As powerful and impressive as they are I really don't see the point of owning cars like that when you'll never get to drive them properly in the UK. Money up the spout for the perpetually frustrated and arrogant. Not that I'm opinionated about it or anything...

I'm more impressed by somone who can see beauty through a lens than someone that can pay bucket loads of money to press a pedal and make a lump of metal go faster than someone elses lump of metal.

[/soap box][/poor box]

Edit - I'd still love to drive them round a track though. [/hypocrite]

It's not really something you can explain. The noise of the cars. The beauty of them. The thrill from just a second or so of brutal acceleration on a straight road with no-one around. Knowing you have a work of automative mastery (regardless of whatever anyone else has got, or what they think of your car).

It's difficult to describe such a visceral emotion as being a true petrolhead, who loves cars, but suffice to say that it's got b****r all to do with actually driving at 200mph or at beating someone else at the lights :)

Well put...and I agree. That's why I'd love to do a few track circuits in them. I've just become jaded with London motorists and their aggression to barge their way into an inch of space only to get stuck at lights and race their chav mobiles away from the lights only to hit another jam 50 yards up the road.

I cycle but I also enjoy driving my lovely Alfa. Having been hit by a driver on my bike who 'didn't see me' and then lied to her insurance company about her lack of attention, I think it's given me a different view on drivers in general.

not supprised you saw them round alderley edge its a magnet for sports cars loads of stockbrokers and city folk also very popular with the man utd footballers a certain david beckham still has a house there as well

those R8s look the part still on the look out for one

[Made me feel very sad driving my Mondeo]

But it does exactly the same gets you from AtoB :)

To me there is more kudos in having an older car that has been well looked after than changing it for a newer one.
I can look after cars and my 7 year old Honda Civic Aerodeck (estate) is in near to mint condition and I have often been complimented on it. It is also dealer serviced at whatever cost as I also believe it is more cost effective paying for maintenance rather than pay out for either a new or s/hand replacement.

No, I am not envious of anyone with a flash car, I could not afford something like the cars featured but could afford something "more flash" than either of the cars we have,
both Honda, I would rather spend money on the house than on a shiny new car, they all do the same, get you from AtoB, only some do it in a different style.

Not knocking anyone for splashing out on a new car, if that is what makes you happy go for it, just not my thing.

R8's a fantastic car - sounds as good as it looks.
Here's some snaps from my mobile phone of one that was "on loan" to one of our clients:

Sadly I didn't get any video of it being driven out of the garage :(

Assuming it was not parked legitamitely in a disable bay, can't see the badge, what a scalp that would be for a parking warden:D

Couldn't agree more. For those passionate about cars it's not a case of "mine' bigger than yours" at all. Our CEO has a new supercar almost every other month and seeing/hearing them is quite awe inspiring (if you like cars that is)!

well put

Also, markp - what mobile phone have you got that take photos like that? Do you have a phone attached to an slr or something? ;) :P

:)

Lucky you to spot them all in one day! We are still on the lookout for the R8 (we thought that in posh Surrey, we would have seen one by now!). Can't comment the others, but that Ferrari sounds beautiful... and that's coming from a non-car loving gal ;)

Mind you, that R8 is the most beautiful car:D

all nice motors, bit IF i could afford one, i,d be terrified to leave it anywhere. some jealous a**e keys it, or someone reverses into it .
nope. i,ll stick with my ancient escort. if someone wrote it off tomorow , i,d just go and buy something else.
and i get as much accelerative thrill from my 10 year old bike as most of them do.:D.

I saw a Veyron in Notts once down a country lane, and had no idea what it was :D

Telling people about it later, they all said I should have pranged it one :D:D

A regular at the pub i work at (he's loaded) bought an R8 and sold it within a couple of months because he was bored of it, he's had loads of nice cars in the last year, first one i saw of his was his landrover sport, followed by a porsche, a merceded SL55 AMG, with a VW R32, he's sold his R8 and bought some land rover thing again apparently, i've not seen it yet.
