Yes
Is it just me or has car insurance taken a huge jump in the last year.

Edit
Looks like I my have found the reason.

Mine only went up £10.00 from last year - £172 to £182. That's fully comp. with breakdown cover and a courtesy car. I was quite pleased with that. :)

I think car insurance cover is the only thing that gets better with age. Well, there is wine and port I suppose . . .

As I noted elsewhere mine went from £360 to £480 (Esure) this year.
I went looking for meercats and got a better deal, @£320. ( the nodding dog)
It pays to shop around, I do it every year.
I don't even bother phoning up to see if they'll budge, if they don't offer me "Best price" from the out-set, they've blown it.

IIRC mine is due late August.......will see what the renewal letter invitation says?

Mine went from £330 to £530 approx this year, no claims etc. I shopped around, but the cheaper alternatives were only unto £40 cheaper and were completely unknown companies, so I preferred to pay the extra £40 and stick with LV+. Pretty rubbish though to be paying so much extra for no additional risk - unless it's the number of uninsured vehicles driven by young a***holes crashing into people that has done it.

That increase is bad!

I am and have been with LV for some years, so will see what I get invited to renew at soonish?

I don't think it's anything to do with me or my car but it may be the area I'm in - there are a lot of quite obviously uninsured/untaxed/un-MoT'd hot hatches and other souped up rubbish cars here. My car is a Mazda 6 estate GT Sport Nav (184 ps) diesel, fairly performant but not exactly a sports or high value car. I dread to think what I'd be paying if I still had the Disco as well!

Blimey, it seems living here on the Isle of Wight is advantageous. Lucky me.

I was paying five times that ten years ago when I lived in England (not IOW). Mind you, the cars I had then were not wheelchair enabled Berlingos.

mine was £580 last year and it was going up to 675…. looked around and cheapest was 600 so phoned and told them I had found it for 600, took a few minutes and they got it back down to £535. Rather odd I thought.

Last year £185 and change this years renewal quote £275 and change, thought that was a bit of a hike so had a shop around the usual suspects and most are coming in at over £300 so I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and stick.

Last renewal was under £400, for Wifey and me on my car. That's with low level breakdown cover, quietly pleased with it. I've been with them (RAC) for 4 years now, so we'll see if the next renewal changes much. £400 is my limit, I shop around at that point.

Motorbike was £100.08, out of interest.

mines gone ridiculous this year
the comparison sites arn't any better either so had to bite the bullet and pay it

this is for me and my wife with over 20 years no claims no convictions and one non fault accident claim 18 months ago
were not particularly young either i'm in my 60's

i dream of the prices some of you are getting :(

just went to renew the wife's before she comes back in a few weeks and its gone from £280ish last year to nothing under £800 now! im starting to think the quote engines are broken! its absolutely ridiculous.

You all need a motorbike, just had my renewal invitation for my bike, it's gone down. Albeit by only £1.22 but I will take that. (y)

What a terrible diagram/table, makes it look like you'll be paying last year's price.

If it makes anyone feel better, I'm in a "high risk" post code with the most expensive insurance category 50 car....... it was £1300 last year, due for renewal in less than 2 month's time :hungover:

the diagram is how the renewal quote was presented in the Email
i would say it's definitely done on purpose so the lower price is the last figure you read

mines an insurance category 40 not as high as yours but i wish you luck when the renewal comes

I had to look up "insurance groups"

According to Parkers guide mine is 23, it is due for renewal late August so surmise I will get the invitation to renew with LV before the end of July ?

I drove a Fiesta 1.0 titanium (2016), it was £188 fully comp. I changed my car recently to an Audi Q3 (2020) , when I rang my insurer (LV) I was expecting a big hike, instead I was refunded £5 odd…. Happy days

I think that model of Fiesta appeals to younger drivers, especially those that have just passed their tests, being a 1 litre, cheapish insurance (in new driver terms) but it's also a very good looking car with quite aggresive, sporty looks, a bit like a watered down ST.

Same with VXR lookalike, small engined Corsas.

A lot of them get wrapped up which probably explains the higher insurance costs over the Audi.

My Mazda 6 increased by about £50 p.a. to £307. I did try comparison sites but on this occasion quotes were higher.

I'm convinced that they make these up as they go along.
My previous car was Chrysler crossfire ( group 46) £160 per year V6 3.2
My current car Astra VXR ( group 34) £320. per year. 16v 2.0 turbo.
Both have almost identical performance figures, 0-06 in around 6 seconds & 230bhp
As an aside the road tax was the same for both an outrageous £360 / year.

Well LV sent me the renewal invitation

Last year I paid £366.49 and this year's offer is £434.08

A £67.59 / 18.5% increase.....

I will be phoning them to see what they can do about it! I wonder if a person pressing the buttond can get it under £400 i.e. under 10%

Well, I have just phoned and just by asking he reduced it to £412.38 i.e. a 12.5% increase on last year, rather than the 18.5% increase on the renewal letter.
Though why do you have to phone to get what is quickly offered!

PS one monetary change I noticed is the Excess going up by £100.......such is the repair industry costs rising :(

I would definitely not recommend Aviva. They've taken four months, so far, to not resolve a no-injury collision. :(

I would definitely not recommend Aviva.
They wanted over £500 from me.
As above the nodding dog, £200 cheaper.
I'm sure they makes these things up as they go along.
Either that or a lot of you are driving very expensive high performance cars.
As above £320 for a pocket rocket.
Maybe being an old git with no claims or convictions in well over 20 years helps?

Not just car insurance, my travel insurance renewal was a fairly high increase, called them -and at the time mentioned they didn’t even offer a ‘no claim’ discount’ 30 seconds on hold and the premium reduced to below last years, WTF! Renew it again though, same game next year probably.

Earlier in the month I had an interesting one with a specialist bike insurer, did the usual on line quote comparison, picked the 'Bike' specialist because it was 'sure' to understand that Bike and Car insurance had different requirements. Anyway the online quote also said phone us and we may be able to do a better rate, so I did, they did the whole hundred questions thing over the phone and came up with a slightly better price. We compared it with the other on line prices I had got and the actual cover included which had to include riding other bikes not belonging to me, as per the online quote which they confirmed would be the case. I agreed and paid the almost £600 by phone, they would send me a summary of the policy to be electronically signed and al would be good. Except the exclusions which included no cover when riding bikes not belonging to me, back on the phone to complain another wait for almost half an hour to answer and be told that the on line quote was a computer error and the minimum cover for riding other peoples bikes was not something they could offer, it then took them another half a hour to try different insurance syndicates before again saying it was not something that they could offer. Eventually they agreed to cancel and refund, which they did on the same say as the payment was taken.

Moral of story, read all the documents as soon as they send them to you, don't except anything from the quote or what they have said on the phone and if you have any doubt get it clarified in writing.

The particular reason for wanting cover to ride any bike is that my son is looking to buy his first bike, had I assumed that the information disclosed by the insurance company both on line and by phone was correct I could potentially have ridden his bike without the minimum legal insurance cover.

Try Adelaide Insurance (although I think they’ve rebranded to Cornmarket now?) for bike insurance. They were always the cheapest when I was riding, I gave up a couple of years back. They also got decent reviews and feedback.

Thank you for the tip I will try to remember them next year, I did get insured with another well known and well established bike insurer for a much more reasonable price but with a hideously high excess.

I'm running a highly modified Audi RS3 Sportback and my provider was Performance Direct and it went from £480 last year to a quote of over £1200. Lots of owners on the forums were getting the same ridiculously high new quotes as well. I shopped round and got sorted with Sterling and basically the same price as last year with an agreed value including all the mods so I'm happy about that.

Last year with LV I paid £438, renewal quote for this year £711. After shopping around the cheapest I could get for the same cover £741. After speaking to LV the lowest they would go was £675, an increase of 54%, I'm now spending more on insurance than I do on petrol.

I do a Compare the wotnot every year and every year haggle. I'm paying less for next year than I did for last year for the same cover, with the same company, who were going to increase it by around 25%. I quoted them a "new customer price" and threatened to go with a competitor! That did the trick!

My quote for the Alfa was £280, compared to £195 last year, so I asked the meerkats and they found me £220 with Rac breakdown cover.

Mine went up by £230, nothing new on the policy except another year of NCB. I understand insurance has gone up because of the extra cost of labour and parts but some of the figures I'm seeing are bonkers, particularly @beyond the blue , thats nothing short of daylight robbery.

I did call and say I'd found cheaper elsewhere, they wanted details of who, where, what perks etc, and then they 'price matched' by knocking £13 off their quote. Bonkers.

My renewal showed a 33% increase for 3 cars, the % varied from car to car. I did a comparison site search on the main car and found offers much lower than my renewal quote so I contacted my existing insurers and they offered reduced quotes on all the cars, but still higher than the comparison site quote. (I did not give the quote to my insurers).

I thought this was good news until I got price comparison quotes for the other two cars. These were substantially higher so it looks like I’ll be back with my existing insurer. It all seems a bit of a game, heavily weighted in favour of the insurers. If they are supposed to be independent to each other, why do they all decide to increase prices at the same time.

With all the other household price increases, I’m sure several people will unfortunately have to give up their car.

Received my policy renewal quote from Churchill yesterday, increased from £266 last year to £409!! Checked quotes on comparison sites and several nearer £300 for the equivalent policy. Rang Churchill and managed to get my renewal down to £300.70 after reminding them I also have my house insurance with them. Result!

I have three cars and one was due recently, the bill went up £200 or so but a phone call got the increase down to £100. I couldn't do better on the usual comparison sites so I took the deal.

The other two cars are due in January and I'm expecting big jumps for them too.

Mine are due in Jan and Feb next year. I think the ‘dog’ friendly second car will have to go as now being a pensioner 2 cars are somewhat of a luxury.

will no doubt have fun trying to get my grumpy staffie into the Aygo
