I'm reading a lot of mixed reviews on things. What's the best one that works?

Are you talking about ones that disinfect air conditioning in cars? If so, I've happily used the Autoglym one on an annual basis. I also change the pollen filter every year.

I've used the Mcguires one with some sucess, doesn't seem to last long though. Also I've used febreeze and put the fan on re-cuirculate (much cheaper!)

If you have a musty smell from your air conditioning, then these do work OK for a while. One I tried lasted a few weeks, but another just a few days.

The thing I found worked the best was spray cans of dettol all in one for about £3 in the supermarket. The same product is called Lysol elsewhere in the world. It eliminates the mould spores that can build up on the fins of the AC condenser and in nooks and crannies of your AC plumbing.

Find the air intake for your AC, and with the engine running and the AC on and fans at max, spray about 1/3 of the contents into the air intake. Every minute switch off the AC but keep the fans running (spray some more in), switch on the AC, spray some more in, switch from air coming in from the outside to recirculation mode, spray some more in, and so forth. Repeat until the can is empty. This ensures that every tube and path for air coming into your car will have had a good coating of the stuff.

Just the other day I noticed the AC was a little musty and thought I needed a freshener bomb - this may save me a few quid :)

Out of interest (because I know very little of cars) where would I start looking for the A/C intake? It's a Honda Civic if that helps.

They are all basic disinfectants and they pretty much do what it says on the tin. I bet they are all very similar. They won't kill anything major like mould infestation just tidy things up a little bit.

A major aircon service also involves full disinfection of the system and can be had for just £35 all around Birmingham and probably other mega-hellholes.

Pollen filter change is dead easy and it is well worth it to add a couple £ and buy activated charcoal or even more premium versions. They do reduce the smell from other cars exhausts!

If using an air con bomb I'd recommend removing the pollen filter first especially if it's a carbon impregnated one. If not any of the disenfectant gets stuck in the pollen filter and won't reach the area where mould occurs on the evaporator.
