Got my copy of Capture NX2 from the D700 offer today, havent installed it yet, as i thought i could probably sell it for £60. But has it got something lightroom and cs4 hasnt? i have capture nx already.

any NX2 users out there?

Yes a NX2 user here, didnt have the dosh for CS so I have NX2 instead, I quite like the adjustments through dragging sliders etc. I quite like it, but it would be good to have some form of scripting to enable maybe watermarking and exif shot details to be added to the picture.

NX 2 is a great processing tool. You can access quite a few of the camera specific features inside the raw that other third-party software can't. You can also chop and change between the picture controls and so selective adjustments to colour, etc with its uPoint technology. Very capable.

My gripes with it are the complete lack of digital asset management functionality within it

NX2 is way better than CS4/Lightroom/Aperture at RAW conversions, and the control points are really useful. But it is very slow so not great for large numbers of images.

hmm.i never use the in camera enhancements, so not sure that would be applicable

What in camera enhancements? You always have the picture settings, most RAW convertors don't use the info ( because they either can't or decided not to ) but they're always on. What is good is that the initial image out of NX2 before any adjustments is the same as it would be in jpg from the camera. That really is very useful.

I tend to use Aperture for everything, up until I want to print a shot. Then I use NX2 to re-process the RAW from scratch to get the best quality.

i mean picture control settings, might be useful if i had a lot to process, but i do it as a hobby so no client deadlines to work to, i might do some comparison tests then to see if the raw processing is an improvement as you say, i hadn't thought it would be that much better so never compared them

One of the problems I noticed when I tried lightroom is that it didnt support the Nikon picture enhancements, I think they may have addressed this now, but I seem to prefer NX2 at the moment.

If you don't use any of the picture controls, or you haven't modified any of the settings within the camera such as saturation etc, and you don't ever use Active D Lighting (depending on your camera model) then that particular benefit is probably meaningless to you.

It still provides the uPoint selective controls though, which is very useful. Also there are some who claim even a straight conversion from NEF to JPG from within Capture NX 2 is better than from, say, Aperture. Personally when I tried it I couldn't see any real discernible difference.

Recently I've been playing with the trial version of Phase One's Capture One Pro 4. This has given me the best results. I really like it, but once the trial expires I don't think I'll fork out nigh on £300 for it.

I agree with your views LJR, thats why i sold it LOL
